Posted - 02/28/2010 : 07:18:21 AM I love my Logitech USB headphones. During Kanikapila, I was using the computer's own microphone, but listening through the headphones. This way, my voice and the steel guitar are the same volume on Alika's end (hopefully) and she won't hear much of her own music coming back at her. Skype lets you make choices like this. It is very friendly software. During kanikapila, you should not turn your video on, as it will slow down your computer just a little bit more...

Posted - 02/27/2010 : 08:01:56 AM Because of the slight delay I heard last night, I know now that I have to really focus on what I'm playing instead of listening to your background steel playing because otherwise I will have slight pitch problems here and there.
Mahalo nui for coming in last night. You missed Ray by like a minute. Aue!
Can we do another one two Fridays from now? I was thinking every other Friday, same time, same place.

Posted - 02/27/2010 : 06:31:31 AM Last night, Alika in Maine and I (here in Kona, Hawaii) did a Skype kanikapila - Just the two of us. We kept it simple, and it went quite well. Alika has a nice voice, and she played several songs on her 'ukulele. It sounded fine on my end. I played the steel guitar, and Alika did notice a slight delay, but it was workable. Little Grass Shack worked just fine. Those of you who live far from other musicians should consider installing Skype on your computer. It's free, and no harder to figure out than a microwave oven. I could not agree with that sentiment more.
If one of the participants can keep a good slow steady beat, then the others may be able to add melodies that will fit. It would end up working kind of like a round like "row-row-row-your-boat".
I will not be joining, since I do not have broadband at home (in spite of being a computer engineer, it is a long story).
Again - good luck and have fun.

Posted - 02/25/2010 : 2:08:38 PM In conjunction with Lawrence's comments, I have been involved in a project that used Skype to provide real time video guidance for blind people. With this system we invariable experienced a 1-3 second delay between the audio and the visual. In using the system within the same space (where one could hear the real and transmitted audio) there was a 0.5 second or so delay. This might make for some interesting music--maybe realtime looping. Good luck. We had to give up on Skype due to bandwidth issues and a lot of dropped calls. Aloha, Allen |

Posted - 02/25/2010 : 1:54:03 PM I have played music with guys in England from here in Kona, and while there was a slight wierdness, it was really fun. We also added a guy from the east coast and did a 3 way. It still worked out well. I don't know what will happen as we add more players.. but if it works, the world will be a better place! Posted - 02/23/2010 : 6:04:51 PM Sounds over my head. I don't think we have Skype. At least, it's never come up in conversation here. But theres a lot of stuff on the 'puter I don't recognize. Unkp Paul |

Posted - 02/23/2010 : 1:48:17 PM Your google must have directed you to the wrong places. Ninjam works on all versions of Windows, and many have used it on XP. There are a few hiccups with Win7-64 bit at the moment but Win7 32 bit works fine (so far as I know), as well as OSX. However, getting it setup and finding a suitable server are both non-trival. It may not be your cup of Tea (or Kava).
If you use the Cockos provided server you have to participate in their groups, but any reliable server can be used (according to the Users Forum).
Here is the Reaper NinJam Users Forum location:
http://forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=10
Anyway, good luck with your Skype experiment.
