You know it! I once sat and listened to them rehearse in Kapiolani Park completely au naturel. I have never been more blown away by Hawaiian music.

These guys just performed at the Craft Fair I was attending in Sangha Hall during Merrie Monarch week. It was great to hear 3 young guys upholding the tradition. Man, do they sing great and no microphones just like the birds! |

Hey Bill, thanks so much for the information. I am so longing for old-style Hawaiian music, don't find it so much anymore.
In 1975 or so, my boyfriend lived in Lanikai. We were sitting around the lanai one evening, and he asked me if I wanted to go see some Hawaiian musician perform at one of the joints in Honolulu. I asked him who it was, and he replied: "somebody named Gabby".
I said no, I was tired and just wanted to stay home.
I DIDN'T KNOW WHO GABBY WAS AT THAT TIME!! Auwe.......

Auntie, mahalo for giving this group such great notice! I have been wanting to do the same since I received the pre-release copy of their CD, but I am a little too close to the subject matter to give an objective review since (a) these guys were my incredible band when I won the falsetto contest, and (b) Halehaku Seabury is my best friend and the best man at my wedding.
Their CD is so reminscent of fantastic old school Hawaiian music. You could easily compare them to Na Palapalai (with whom they are great friends and for whom members of Na Hoa have subbed in the rotating Na Palapalai line-up for live performances), but they are not the same.
For anyone who stayed up until ridiculous hours to watch the 'auana portion of the Merrie Monarch festival, you listened to 2/3 of this group half of the evening. Ikaika and Keoni backed up numerous halau Saturday evening, and I knew their distinctive voices even without being able to see them "behind the glass." Halehaku was back on O'ahu performing with Manoa Madness (with Chino Montero and Nathan Nahinu) while his homemaking companion and mother of their beautiful 2-year-old son, Kahiwamanô, was dancing with the winning ladies halau.
I love these guys to death. Please support them by checking out their album.
