Posted - 09/09/2009 : 03:27:19 AM Does this mean you guys didn't listen to Auntie in the first place? Didn't I tell you it was good? Yes, I did. Listen. Do so. And hope it is not too late.
Lucky we got to hear him sing `Ulili E in real person at Kaka`ako. That is why I was over the top with joy. |

Posted - 09/08/2009 : 2:32:25 PM Howzit Everybody,
Excuse me if I'm a couple of years late on this CD review but I just recieved a copy a couple of weeks ago.Do yourself a favor and email Professah Pocho right away for a copy of your own. On a couple of tracks, namely Nani Ko'olau, Lanakila Kawaihao,Kalawao & Kaulana Waipi'o had I not known it was Peter Medeiros I'd be inclined to believe it was Eddie Kamae & the Sons of Hawaii with the Reverend Dennis Kamakahi. All that's missing is "Feets" on steel. Haleakala & Kaneohe suggests an approach that is reminiscent of how Sunday Manoa would do these songs. Other old time standards included on this CD are "Ulili 'E" (My new fav. version) "Green Rose Hula" excellently done & chicken skin provoking. "Hilo 'E" (Also my new fav. version)And last but not least the classic ki ho'alu standard that every slacker should have in his repertoire "Opihi moemoe" Peter's version is the closest rendition I have heard to Leonard Kwan's. Just imagine how Kwan played it with better audio. In my humble opinion, top to bottom it is one of the best CDs released since Guava Jam & Cracked Seed.I don't know how this traditional Hawaiian music gem slipped through the cracks but......GO GET YOU ONE!!!!!!!

Posted - 10/08/2008 : 7:13:35 PM Guys, no talk; email Peter and buy two CD's. Now! Why? Coz one you play and da udda one you give to your slack key sensei; besides, help out da guy. Albeit, Peter sings in the style I grew into back in 1950 - 1957 in Kailua-Kona, Hilo, Kamuela, Kalapana, and Kau (notice da 5 districts). Then, male voices were raspy: cigarettes, beyah, and wine; not really. And, Peter did ALL (oh, sorry, had Ozzie Kotani backup): voice, ukulele, tiple, guitar, etc (but not the thunder, crowing rooster, birds, and makani). Phrasing, pronunciation, and enunciation jus like Kamehameha School music direc'ta said NOT fo do. Helps if you get gray hair! Besides, us kane can Kalohe-hula to dis one.
Aloha, Herb |

Posted - 10/08/2008 : 09:36:55 AM Well, what are you waiting for? Go contact Peter before they're all gone. We both enjoyed this album very much. The use of some less common instruments adds to the character of the music. The homage to the past is clear and beautiful-the reverence is evident in the arrangements and the vocals. And the vocal styles are varied, no repetitive formula , but all excellent. Paul |

Posted - 10/07/2008 : 4:07:22 PM Mele man came again today. Well, I am not a music scholar, I only just know what I like. And I like this recording. I like it very much. Nothing is borining, nothing is the same, nothing fits into neat little categories. It is just all good music, all good fun. It is pure and unadulterated. It makes my heart soar. My opinion, the highlight is Hilo E. I absolutely love how Peter did honor to that song. Shootz, they all were great. I don't even know how to begin to tell you about this recording. If you can get it, I recommend you do so. This is obviously going to become more precious as his supply dwindles.
It is a gem, a precious gem. Thank you, Peter, for giving us a chance to hear such a great assortment of music and for interpreting the music for us in your very own personal way. Mahalo nui loa. |

Posted - 09/24/2008 : 1:40:14 PM Norman, you are correct, but not just about your view. The StarBull minireview did not do Peter, or his music, justice. It was "damned by faint praise". I suppose one takes praise, however given, as a "good" in the socioeconomic sense. Peter's music has, at base, an active thought process (sorry for categorizing you Peter - you can fire at will), where the others to which he was, or is, compared simply played, without much, or any, thought. It is up to the ultimate consumer - the listener/buyer - what sort of music one thinks one appreciates. Absent Gabby or Sonny and their like, I'll take Peter (or Kevin or the other Peter - Pekelo) any day of the week. YMMV, and I'll bet it does.

Aloha Peter, The above quote from me does not do you enough justice. I received my copy from you a couple of days ago and have been listening to it on and off since then. Sometimes just a favorite cut and sometimes straight through. It is very unique while at the same time being very traditional. A breath of fresh air! I'm so glad I had you send me a copy. I will enjoy playing tracks from it for my listeners at the radio station. My favorite songs by the way are Kui Tree, Nani Ko'olau, Kane'ohe and 'Opihi Moemoe. Just a super CD!! |

Posted - 09/18/2008 : 12:40:48 PM I am one of the lucky ones to have picked up a few copies from Peter in Kaneohe last time I had lessons with him. Not that he needs it, but I will second and third the previous opinions that this is an excellent album and a very good one to add to your Slack Key Library.
CPatch - you may borrow mine for a listen if you remind me next time we meet at Slack Key Open Mike. I think I gave a copy to Chunky/Monkey as well. |

I was mentored by Peter Moon for many years and learned from the best starting with my dad, than Liko Martin, and Sonny Chillingworth. Because of my relationship with Peter I met and studied Gabby and also Leonard Kwan. However, I chose not to become an entertainer but too teach. So there were a good number of current artists who studied with me at the University in the 70's, 80's and from 1999 through today. Yes it is an honor to be compared to them, but all I am doing is passing on what I learned from them. |
