Great news -- Myrna & Eddie Kamae's film "Listen to the Forest" is releasing on DVD (uiha!) on May 18, according to the press release:
Listen To The Forest, an environmental documentary by award-winning musician and filmmaker Eddie Kamae, speaks to the widespread
concern for rainforest preservation. It is about the Hawaiian Islands, and also about a Hawaiian way of feeling. A film for all ages, Listen To The Forest emphasizes the powerful connection between a unique natural history and Hawaii’s rich cultural life. Combining interviews, traditional chants, and original songs and dances, this film from the beloved Hawaiian Legacy Series, gives voice to an
older form of ecological wisdom summed up in the phrase malama `aina – to take care of the earth – which is both our physical home and a source of spiritual nourishment.

We just got the one about Luther Kahekili Makekau an enjoyed it ever so much. At the end when he sings Hi`ilawe, wow, that was really something. But all throughout the film, we were so tickled by stories about Luther. He was the luna of kolohe. An enormous amount of wisdom and information was lost when he passed on. I highly recommend that film. Then again, I highly recommend them all. Each one is so special. You can use paypal through their website. We ordered late on Monday and it got here on Thursday. |

Myrna told me the plan is for all of their films to be re-released on DVD this year. Yahooooooooooo! And she and Eddie are working on two new ones:

FEEDING THE SOUL Release date 2012
Although I've got all of their films on video (and put them into digitized format on DVDs a year or so ago), I'm delighted that the re-release of these treasures will be "new" to a whole audience who never saw the originals. Full list of films is here; click film titles for details:

Finally. Thanks for the heads up. I haven't seen this since 1993 when Uncle Eddie came to Kennedy Center in D.C. to premiere "The Hawaiian Way." They also showed "Listen To The Forest" and "Li'a: The Legacy Of A Hawaiian Man."
I hope they have plans for remastering "Li'a" soon. Gripping stuff.
