We were in Waikoloa last March for the Ukulele Festeval, We stayed where the Hawaiians Unlimited (One of the best unreleased Hawaiian bands exauant), house band played. Lena Naipo is the front man. An excellent and tight local group to see. I lent Duke Tatum my DeVine Tenor uke for the pool party, and you could see Duke streach out and go in ways that he hadn't done before! The one thing he prefers to do is bend the strings alot and mine wasn't set up that way. That is partly an issue with the type of strings. It is also my opinion also that the intonation that the DeVine has is so stable over a wide dynamic range that perhaps more effort must go into the strings.
It was quite a learning experiance to see and hear the instrument in the hands of a good player in that setting with his hui doing what they do. Such a blessing.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Kimo does really have a special touch.
The main mic I used was a Peluso 251 LDC. I also used a Josephson c42 over the left shoulder. |

beautiful playing Killing Me Softly, subtle and evocative like a sip of honey dew, if I saved for a few years I could afford one of them beautiful ukes but it would take me a lifetime to gain the artistry in those magical fingers . . .

Yeah he is a great guy and I usually visit with him every time I go Home. One of the mellowest players I know of. His right hand is magic. |
