Posted - 09/15/2011 : 02:03:40 AM Was any live video taken on that day? Would love to watch if there are any...Back here on Maui, we haven't gotten together in a long while...I really do miss it a lot too. What made matters worse, when our old computer crashed, I had lost all the pictures that were ever taken during the years past before the passing of Uncle Sol Kawaihoa. But Andrew was kind enough to send me a few, and the pictures Reid and Sarah sent me by mail, I still have In fact, the one with me Sarah, Reid, Uncle Sol, and everyone else I have as my desktop-photo. "HEY CAN I JOIN YOUR GET-TOGETHERS?"lol Some day I hope it'll happen again here in Maui, Hawaii. Take care!

Posted - 09/09/2011 : 07:54:04 AM The first time I met Braddah Pekelo, was during a slack key jam-session at Maui's "Bailey House Museum". Many were there that day, Braddah Kevin Brown, myself, The Late Uncle Sol, Reid just to name a few, all of us having a share in solo-stylings along with Pekelo and everyone else backing eachother up. What a jam-session we had that day.... The highlight tho of it all, was having Pekelo play for us. When evening came, and everyone had left, Pekelo and I just kept on going. I had my Dad's Dad's old Martin Tenor guitar, and he had his favorite old Martin Guitar. For as much as I loved and enjoyed our private jam-session, Pekelo enjoyed playing my Martin as well, and I his...I will miss him dearly...He had shared so much with me that evening....the importance of the 5/4 6/4 5/4 6/4 bass-line. To play how you feel...from the heart.
"To Braddah Pekelo...I will indeed miss you dearly...Mahalo so much for all that you have shared with me, and taught me during our session together. I will forever remember that moment in time...I Love You My Braddah..."
"To Pekelo's Ohana...My deepest condolence for your loss. Pekelo has been an inspiration to me. His memory will live with me forever..."
Sincerely,
Bill Pellazar (Paia Maui) |

Posted - 08/27/2011 : 07:44:36 AM What a shock! He was so dynamic with a big talent and aloha to match, and he had grown in his lifestyle for the better in the last decades. He was the kind of guy you thought would just always be around, doing his thing. He touched us personally when Sarah and I played with him and Kevin and Geri and Sheldon and all the other guys at the old, but not forgotten, kanikapila in Waihe'e. And at the Blue Marlin in Ma'alea. His life leaves many ripples throughout the ocean of people who knew him, however far away they may be.

Posted - 08/25/2011 : 10:46:07 PM For many Hawaiians, when a person dies, he or she is not really dead, but lives on instead in a spirit world. These ancestors remain alive because they are remembered and drawn on for support and inspiration. For in remembrance lies persistence, which is continuity, which is the link from the past through the present and into the future. |

Posted - 08/25/2011 : 09:06:33 AM He was one of my favorite singers. I remember one time he gave me a thumbs up while I sang Hiʻilawe. I was thrilled to be recognized by him. I was encouraged to keep at it. |

I saw Pekelo at NWFolklife a bunch of years ago. I had the CD (WHERE IS IT?) from the concert. Crash Kealoha (RIP) was the MC and said that Pekelo sounded spookily like Gabby when he sang. Braddah was right. Humor, humility, skill. Chicken skin! We miss you............
Eh, Brah! You made me one tape of 'em 6 years or so ago. Got 'em. I cut you a new CD from 'em. |

Posted - 08/25/2011 : 02:02:31 AM Pekelo was my teacher. He always treated me like a brother. He showed this Haole boy kiho'alu with more Aloha than I'd ever felt before. He was so old school -- his voice echoed the ancestors & kupuna. Sitting here in Kula tonight, I hear him singing Koali, the mele he learned from his mother growing up in Hana. In the Sons of Hawaii documentary he recalls stringing his first guitar with his father's fishing line. Now he walks with the Spirits, his guitar strapped to his back. Aloha, Peter. |

Posted - 08/24/2011 : 7:13:34 PM I'll be playing lots of Pekelo music on my radio show tomorrow -- and since I'm subbing for the programmer for the show which follows mine, that gives me more chances to play Pekelo's tunes. |
