OK. I am ashamed. Norm pointed out the whole reason I started doing this in the first place -- to share the music that I love. I reckon I need to agree with him that if I wish to introduce the music to the widest possible audience, posting in both venues will help to accomplish that mission.

So I am eating my words. I apologize.

Here is the link to this week's playlist.

For those of you that have the CD "Imprint" by Kapala. Take a listen to one of my favorite songs on that CD, "Pauoa".

Then look at this video.

Then ask the question. Why isn't Shawn Ishimoto considered to be a member of Kapala?

I am so glad you guys are commenting on stuff you heard on the list. I like to get dialogue flowing. Mahalo.

Bill, thank you for the post about Zanuck. I have the Ho`omalie CD and play "Model T" on the radio show regularly. As you and many others here know, I am a big supporter of musicians who refuse to be boxed in by someone else's boundaries, and it's good to learn that it's Zanuck's influence that has taken these bands in new directions.

Correction needed...

Ho`omalie members were Lopaka Ho`opi`i, Kimo Hussey, John Enos, and Zanuck Lindsey.

Zanuck and Lopaka -- joined by Richard Heirakuji, Kimo Artis (formerly of Kanilau) and his brother Lance Artis, and Adriano Lorioza -- are now Kapala.

"Kapala" was formerly "Ho'omalie." Their CD "Only You" set a new course - in my humble opinion - for Hawaiian music. And that is because Zanuck Lindsey is a musical chameleon at home in any style or genre. To him, it is all just "music" - not Hawaiian music, jazz music, chamber music... So by throwing all of his influences in a blender, he has created a unique sound all his own.

And at a huge cost, too, since what he does can by no means be considered "traditional" and, therefore, will always be under scrutiny from purists. Find the "Only You" CD and dig Zanuck's arrangment of "Model T" - in 5/4 time.

Before he was "Kapala" or "Ho'omalie," Zanuck was also "Hula Joe and the Hutjumpers" - combining swing and Hawaiian. And before that - I would challenge anyone to remember this - he was "Z and the Free Radicals," a jazz-rock organization featuring the amazing Ginai on vocals.

Did I mention that he is a chameleon?

Thanks, Wanda. As many have already observed, "So much music, so little time."

Their CD, "Imprint," was my favorite album out of the Islands in 2010. They put a creative spin on a number of Hawaiian classics, as well as some strong original selections. I got to chat with band member Zanuck Lindsey when he was here a couple months back, to do a short set with Amy Hanaiali`i.

Bubba, I am glad you enjoy the music and the playlist. I've decided no more facebook friends unless I know them personally. That way the possibility of misunderstandings simply because we do not know the personalities of each other are lessened. My Mele Monday page on facebook is a group page and a person does not have to be my personal facebook friend in order to access the goodies on that page. A member of the group can add new members to the group. The way I have it set up now, anyone can add. Therefore you folks who frequent that page for all the extra goodies like when Ocean Kaowili shares videos with us or Chino Montero or Shawn Ishimoto, etc., etc., etc., then nominate them. I cannot nominate them if they are not my facebook "friend", but they can ask to join or you can add them if you are already a member. Matter of fact, I wish one of you who is a member of that group to try to add a person just so I can see if it works the way facebook describes it.

I enjoy mele mondays and would note that the only way I can see the link is over Taropatch since you've "banned" me from Facebook - So I'm glad that you've decided to continue on Taropatch. I hope that this doesn't cause you to change your mind.
