Just a question about Taropatch/Facebook: I'm a Facebook user and wonder if you'd describe what I'd find there that was different from here. Can I "friend" the site and get it to appear on my newsfeed? Any thoughts?

I think Facebook is like beer. It's not to everyone's taste, and even those who like it pay a price for overindulging. Me, I kinda like beer, but try to do so in moderation. Same with FB. |

I'm in agreement as well.
My reasons for Facebook avoidance have nothing to do with privacy issues (my information is all over the web already, and I do use Twitter), they are about knowing well my personal habits --- I know that I would spend FAR too much time on it, more than I can realistically spare. Particularly now that I am unemployed and have available time at home (I spend quite a bit of time on LinkedIn these days, yet I can justify that to myself as part of my search for work).
So, by all means, have fun with Facebook and with reconnecting - just keep the 'patch going here, don't force us to go the FB route (which you currently aren't planning to do, of course), and I'll be happy. |

I totally agree with that.
For me, FB started because my elementary school classmate set up a group to reconnect students (and teachers.) It was very cool to share kindergarten photos and see what people are doing now.
For me, I am weighing how to walk the line between public posting and privacy. Technology seems to sacrifice the latter, i.e. everyone knows where you are, what you doing, and when you are doing it. I do not have anything to hide but prefer that people do not know where I am every moment of the day.  I enjoy FB and also try to adjust privacy settings. I do not mind that they make money, but I do not feel that there is transparency on what they do with our data or that there is any user control on how they use it. I have read articles about FB cookies that can track your web browsing habits, even while you are not logged in. |

I think facebook is great. I just saw some photos and a video clip of Admin opening up for HAPA. Way to go Andy!!
It has allowed me make contact with interesting people all around the world. I have had the opportunity to have real time chats with some of my Hawaiian music idols. It's a tool for communication that I find works extremely well. It's also a great resource for information. There are ways of filtering out the content you are not interested in seeing and ways of maintaining privacy. I'm sure it's not perfect, but I haven't had any problems because of my being on facebook for the past few years.
There definitely is a place for both Taropatch and facebook as far as I'm concerned. |

I’d just like to put in a defence of Facebook. I don’t live in the city I grew up in, and I lost touch with lots of people over the years. Before the Internet, we had to rely on writing letters. And during college, and the years immediately after, everyone changed address quite often. It was easy to lose each other.
Now, through the magic of Facebook, I’ve found people who I thought I’d never contact again. In some cases they live on the other side of the world. I’ve got back in touch, seen pictures of their children, all that kind of thing. There’s people I know in America, who I’m going to only see once in a blue moon. Not least of all my friends from the Aloha camps I’ve been on. FB makes it easy to keep in touch without having to try and maintain a lengthy correspondence with lots of people.
And you don’t have to share any information you don’t want to, really. If I decide the world mustn’t see the picture of me in the chicken suit, well I don’t put it on there.
Mind you, I’ve been on FB for a few years, and although I used to post more often, the novelty has worn off and I don’t get round to it much these days.

I also don't do facebook, and never will. I see little point in providing information about myself for their advertiser's database. And that, of course, is the entire purpose of the site...
