I have a tuner pedal on my pedal rack (graphic equalizer and reverb are the others). When I engage it, it stops sound from coming out, so I tune quietly, in between numbers. It helps a lot and doesn't distract everyone else. |

From the artists standpoint especially those cursed with perfect pitch, I can't imagine that they would enjoy playing if they knew they were out of tune. For them, that would be worse than nails on a chalkboard. Stephen Inglis seems to re tune more than any one that I have seen live in concert. He always says "We tune because we care, man. We tune because we care." and then he attributes that statement to Jimi Hendrix. It gets to be a joke with the audience after a while. |

Hapa's Barry tweaks his tuning constantly while playing. If I could do that, I might worry about tuning a lot less. Even though it is a very skillful move, I found it to be distracting.
...as if Barry would want to hear that from an amateur from Illinois that plays out only once a month  |

I turned my volume down all the way and tuned while talking. You can talk about history of slack key, tunings, introduce the next song... then when ready, turn the sound up and go. |

From the audience standpoint, I find it almost like scratching your fingernails on a chalkboard to be retuning a guitar on stage in front of your audience. Maybe it is OK if you just have maybe one string to lower or something like that. |

Hey Bob I know exactly what you mean about the re-tuning issues. I always have at least 2 guitars. One in C6th Maunaloa (my fav) then one in Taropatch to go back & forth to Drop C. 2 different C tunings because some songs play out better in one or the other. I dread re-tuning to Open D capoed up to E for Olomana songs & have had instances where the tuning goes sour in the middle of the song. If we're at a planned gig & I want to play E songs then we bring a 3rd guitar for me tuned in advance.
BTW I'm stoked that Andy had that big time opportunity to open for Hapa....Cheeeee pono!!!! |

Congrats for being confident enough to re-tuning on stage, Andy.
I do not re-tune on stage yet. Seems whenever I try it, within a few measures I regret not having a pre-tuned guitar wating.
It drives me crazy to play an entire song with a slightly out of tune guitar!
Got to work on it. |

Glad you guys are enjoying the list this week. Both Keven and Sheldon Brown know Kaulike and they sing his praises. Great talent for one so young. Imagine how good he still can be! Seems like Kuana Torres Kahele has inspired several young musicians! That's the way to keep it going. Inspire the younger generations.

Thanks for this week's top billing. Opening for HAPA in NYC was quite the experience. I had an amazing time... played a 30 minute set, came back up with HAPA for the hana hou. Cool venue and met awesome people at the show. I survived!  |
