Howdy Y'all,
Been a while since I posted, still strugling, but hav'nt given up on slack key! Been thinking bout switching to standard tuning as more tabs are available. Blues and Bluegrass is a nice contrast to slack, but, nothing comes close to the sweet sound of "Hawaii."
Recently got John Keawe's instructional DVD, unreal style, really liked Momma's music box, Auhele, and Maunaolana.
Trying to learn Momma's music box by hearing and watching, got lost after intro.
Looking for some advice on learning to play by ear. Any kokua would be appreciated.
Also wanted to give a shout out to kumu Duke58, great job with haumana Reid, seen on Youtube, Nice!!

Appreciate your response, and will follow your advice. I'll use John Keawe's piece Moma's Music Box as a starter, trial-n-error style. Not too complicated and I have the DVD to watch, learn, and apply the methods you suggested.

Long time no see Hawaiian. Mahalo for the kind words concerning Reid. He's a dedicated student. Comes over every Thursday for 3 1/2 hours. Only about half of that time is an actual lesson Though. First gotta have lunch then work on songs. Plenty talk story & at least 1/2 hour to just jam. Trading off while going through the repertoire is part of the lesson too.
As for learning ki ho'alu by ear, once you figure out the chord progression of the song you're half way there. Seeing that you play other genres of guitar you should be able to apply some of that knowledge to learning slack key. Take a little time to figure out how to compensate for the full step slacking of your high E string & I'm sure you'll be able to apply your standard guitar knowledge.
First you figure out the song's melody on your treble strings. Then you figure out what alternating bass pattern (Either 5-4 or 6-4) is appropriate for each section & chord change. You'll also have to "pinch" at the appropriate times. By "pinch" I mean to pluck a melody note & a bass note simultaneously to keep the alternating bass pattern constant.
