Taropatch has been a revelation and a salvation to all of us that support Hawaiian music. It has been the piko, the mothership, the facilitator and instigator for us all. A pohaku in the heiau of Hawaiian music.

Hey Duke. If you can remember more than a couple people that were at Cyril's workshop that year, you are doing really good. It was packed, noisy and hectic. The kanikapila was that same year and probably 2 or 3 days later. I remember you specifically because you left your spot in the circle to greet us personally.
Unfortunately I missed Patrick's second immersion.
All that, and the people from that you mentioned, were an indirect result of Taropatch since I met most of them (and still see them occasionally) through Patrick.
Huge spider web network of music and aloha thanks to Andy and Taropatch.

@ Mika'ele........I think you also attended a good sized kanikapila at Kaka'ako Waterfront Beach Park. I think it's where we first met.

Also, I didn't try to pass on mana'o on Ozzie's unique take on the G6th tuning. Can't be because I can't play anything in it. Bwuahahaha!!! I'm almost positive I tried to give you pointers on Gabby's favorite tuning which is the C6th. Great memories.

Ask me how I remember? You brought 2 Ted's Chocolate Haupia pies to the kanikapila on both occasions.

Cool that you remember me & the Waimea Valley Kanikapila, Dave. But we actually first met at one of Patrick Landeza's Slack Key immersion workshops. I don't remember the name of the Waikiki hotel but I believe it was Cyril Pahinui's slack key workshop & he was teaching how to arppegiate chords in Atta's C. I think that was the first year Patrick did those immersion workshops. The next year Cyril taught at his niece's home which was where Gabby's old house was.

That year I met you I also met Les Wong, Jack Keane, Diane Rigoli & a bunch of others. Sorry I can't name the others, my memory ain't what it used to be

I met Duke in person after years of Taropatch posts at a huge Oahu Kanikapila. Quite an experience, both the Kanikapila and meeting Duke.
Taropatch hooked me up for a visit to Neej's place for a kanikapila there when I happened to be in the area for a week.
Lots of other folks crossed my path through Taropatch... Jerry Sullivan, Fran Guidry, Doug Wong, Wanda and Paul of course, to name a few.
But the post below is the contribution of Taropatch that most significantly changed my music and my musical life. It took me a while to find it but I won't forget that it happened. And I haven't stopped considering myself lucky to have been able to follow up on it.

Duke! Thanks for mentioning me -- I remember the day we sat by the pool and played "He Punahele" and you tried to teach me Ozzie's G6 tuning songs.

Yup Led's sister Lei Aken was there as I mentioned above. Westside Slack Key Festival wasn't on my to do list but who knows. Maybe I'll drop in to talk story.

Yup...I remember you Duke, (and thumbstruck)...yeah, Ozzie signed the guitar many years prior... I also met another one of Led's sister's there as well...good times. Maybe I'll see you at the Slack Key Fest in Eva in October...I'll be sitting in front of the stage...if its really hot, I may use a small umbrella....too hot for this old man. haha.

Forgot to list you above Rik. I remember meeting you at the 1st Bishop Museum Kanikapila we staged. I think we were talking story with Ozzie Kotani at the time. Dunno if you got Oz to sign your guitar that time 'cause you probably already had his autograph on it. But you gave me the honor of signing your guitar. Like I told you then "I don't belong among all those Hawaiian music icons" That was a pretty epic kanikapila. Moke Boy Kamealoha & his dad were there. Po'oma'ikai Lyman was there with her kids who sang a couple. Auntie Lei Aken, Ramon Camarillo & Jesse Gregorio played a couple. Mento Mele Apana was the emcee. TPers Kory Tideman (Thumbstruck) Jack Aldrich (slpry1)Tom (Kihoaluatl...I think)plus the Abrigo Ohana & the regular kanikapila gang. Great memories.

slkho, I remember meeting you. Good you still get here. FB is fun, at times, but not as "friendly" as da 'patch.
slkho Posted - 09/11/2014 : 08:11:38 AM
Thumbstruck, we met once at the Bishop Kanipila...TP is ALWAYS relevant...I'm not a big fan of tech stuff...I do not own a computer, or an Iphone thingy. I pretty much access this site from the local library, or from work. Other sources come & go, this one will remain until Andy says pau, and that's not going to happen.

Great sentiment, Duke! I still visit. It can be challenging to find people that want to look deeper into a music style / culture. When you find them, it's great! We all bring something (along with our inherent ignorance, but being a "blank page" means we start fresh). Humans drag drama with them, born of ignorance, incompetence, and selfishness. Our job is to diminish these in our lives by practice, just like playing music! Jus' press!

I never left Taropatch. Net. Through all the dramas I was involved with here I visit here at least once daily. I'm one of those that spend too much time every day on Face Book because there is much more activity. I can interact & socialize more frequently there than here.

That being said, this site is still a very valuable resource for me. There are a few slack key themed group pages I belong to on FB but the discussions are no where near as in depth as those on Taropatch.Net. I also have to admit that the FB members of the slack key pages aren't as knowledgeable as those who patronize this site. The general members of FB as a whole do not appreciate ki ho'alu like here.

I'll always be thankful to Andy Wang for this website. Besides the sharing of ki ho'alu manao, I'm also grateful for all the people I've met because of this site. Many are now lifelong friends. Mahalo nui loa Andy.
