It is a difficult read, with unusual structure, punctuation and form. And perhaps Old News, for more rabid readers. But Merwin knew and included a great deal of Hawaiian history, also Kauai, the AIDS-like attitude toward Leprosy, and the cruelty, racism, and politics of the time. I will never think of the casual references to Leprosy in the same shallow way...and how it all seems to tie in with Hawaiian history and Western colonial abuses for power and control of the late 19th century.
