Posted - 09/15/2015 : 8:55:17 PM Although the activity here in the 'Patch has dwindled to what seems like a single new post once a week I still hustle "taropatch.net" inspired kanikapila. I've made many connections with musicians who were members here. The very first band I ever played in (Ke Kani Nahe) consisted of 4 'Patch members.
Hookani--Derek "Hookani" Higa S.M 80808--Shawn Machida Olu143--Samson Ah Mook Sang Sir Duke--Duke Domingo
My 2nd group included Terry Brown aka "ukulele911" Then the 3rd band included Jonathan Castillo aka "kealohalaniinc" plus olu 143 & S.M 80808. These guys are all lifeliong friends now. 4 of 5 I met here.
The point here is to make connections because the people here already have a common ground as in the love for kiho'alu or Hawaiian music's many other forms.
Yesterday I held a potluck kanikapila that was inspired by another 'Patch member I had never met before. I hustled a gathering of the local Hawaii gang of musicians to welcome Terry Beckhelm aka Chunky Monkey. Although most of the member mentioned above didn't show up (bad weather) the 'Patch was well represented.
Kealohalaniinc--Jonathan Castillo Kawika96797--David "Kawika" Soon Chunky Monkey--Terry Beckhelm Sir Duke--Me
Plus 'Patch members invited but did not show DKaulia--Donald Batino Kaulia Hookani--Derek "Hookani" Higa OzzieK--Ozzie Kotani olu143--Samson Ah Mook Sang S.M 80808--Shawn Machida ukulele911--Terry Brown Abrigoohana--Abrigo Ohana slackkey808--Zach Onaga Braddah Jay--Jason Barino kaleokeawe--Eric Keawe
I'd estimate that 3/4 of my invites were members of taropatch.net. As you can see, it was heavily inspired by this website. That being said, I strongly recommend you all keep in contact with those you've met here or rekindle the friendships you've lost track of. Kanikapila is the byproduct of Andy's website. Hurry up & go get you some!!!

Posted - 10/29/2015 : 08:08:26 AM Kudos for using "pique" instead of "peak" Mika ele. Not trying to be the forum grammar police here, but just wanted to say good job.
Now off to play some slack-key. I have some work to get done, bu don't really feel like it right now. |

Posted - 10/19/2015 : 06:20:41 AM I too drop in here almost daily, but I only post when motivated to actually comment on something. I keep my repertoire polished up, and learn new tune once in a while.
I don't have any slack key friends to play with or learn from here locally in Idaho. Reached out yes, but not much response. Everyone that I play ki ho'alu for likes it, but I appear to be a lone voice. (Jesse is in northern Idaho, and five hours drive away so we've never connected).
The latest thing is that I studied slack-key uke with Mark Nelson at a ukulele festival a couple of weeks ago. Some of the classes covered stuff that I already play on guitar, but it is different to do it without all six strings. |

Posted - 10/18/2015 : 06:31:30 AM I check about twice a day here.
Will post something soon too.
And yes, hope your shoulder is getting better Gordon. So I can see how far you can throw that fiddle now!

Posted - 10/17/2015 : 9:09:09 PM Hey Jack
I'm doing my daily pass through the 'Patch right now. I come through here every single day. I may not post or comment but I do drop in to see if there's anything going on.
Hey Gordon
I hope your shoulder surgery went well with no complications. Hope you have a speedy recovery & come back better & stronger than ever. |

Posted - 10/16/2015 : 05:08:48 AM It's good company here... I still check this, almost as much as email! Well not quite.
Maybe someday we can play and I'll make the list. But not for awhile, Going in for right shoulder "decompression" surgery today, but hope to be playing in 4-5 weeks. (Little prayer here)... It was affecting my bow arm on violin--nobody could tell the difference with my slack key! But wait'll next year! |

Posted - 10/15/2015 : 08:31:14 AM No worries, Duke. A lot of people get the "vowel" states confused. When I lived in Alaska (AK) I would get calls all the time asking me about work in Arkansas (AR) or Alabama (AL). Only 4,000 miles and four time zones off. Oops.... My business answering machine would almost every day have some sales call that came in at 4:05 am from someone clueless on the east coast calling at 8:05 am their time.
If I ever get to Oahu again, I'll let you know. It would be great to kani, or at least get some 'ono grinds. |
