Posted - 03/15/2016 : 1:01:52 PM I was cleaning out my CD collection and ran across the Taropatch.net member collections for 2004 and 2005. For those of you who weren't around then, TP folks contributed Slack Key and Hawaiian tunes and someone assembled the collection into a 2- or 3-CD release. Craig Patchett (cpatch)and Sarah Whitaker (Sarah) did the 2004 version which had 39 tunes (2 CDs). Jesse Tinsley (hapakid) did the 2005 version which had 71 tunes (3 CDs). Anyway, I had the following thoughts after reading the liner notes and playing a few of the tunes on each CD:
1. The CDs contain an amazing array of talent. Some of us were just learning (My playing then was pretty crude. Hopefully, I sound better after 11 years of practice.). Some of us were good back then. Listening to those early contributions from Fran and Lawrence and Andy and Dave Nye and hapakid and Dusty made me want to be better.
2. I miss the old days. I've been on the Taropatch since 2002. there was a time when I read it 2 or 3 times a day. A lot of what I know about Hawaiian music and Slack Key and playing, I learned from the early days gang. We all seldom agreed on anything, but the varied posts had decades of experience and it was never boring. A few of the early members are still posting, but I miss the discourse from the early days wrecking crew.
3. I uploaded all of the CDs to ITunes and made a backup. Although going through these collections made me sad, I don't want to ever lose this music. These collections represent a time in my life that is certainly in my top 10 of all time. |

Posted - 07/11/2016 : 05:08:54 AM John and Thumbstruck, I agree. I almost always check in here from my desktop - my aging eyes don't much like reading anything more involved than texts or the briefest of emails on my iPhone. I have the device because of business uses in the field and on the go. I call it my "electronic leash" (not smiling when I say that). And has been discussed here before, many of us have zero interest in social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc). Taropatch is good enough for me. If I have time to waste on the computer then I really SHOULD be playing slack-key guitar or my ukulele. Too bad that some of the folks have moved on, but that just leaves more room here for the cool kids.....
I am often reminded of my wife's late grandmother. Born in 1906, she saw covered wagons, had to learn to crank the Model A before her father would let her learn to drive, and lived long enough to see men walking on the moon, personal computers, and the beginnings of the interweb. |

Posted - 07/09/2016 : 10:02:04 AM I remember talking with my Grandfather. He was from northern Sweden back when its main export was people. He said that they had 2 books in the house and music was live. No radio, no devices, no moa nutting. It still takes real folks to play real music in real time. Gadgets can be helpful and distracting, but we're still humans. |

Posted - 07/08/2016 : 2:30:50 PM quote: It's sad to see... the last post... was from me
There's a song in there somewhere, but getting serious for a moment, I think the lack of participation in this wonderful [old] site can be summed up in a word: technology
how 'bout TWO words: progress
maybe THREE words: smart(?)phones
which begs FOUR words: Facebook (i.e. social media et al)
I'm sure there're many other reasons, but herein lies the crux(es), in my opinion. Most of us can't beat 'um--but be assured, I'm one who'll never join 'um.
I don't know how hard it is to access and send messages to this forum via a smart(?)phone, but I'll wager there're a lot of people who don't take the time to fire up the ol' confuser anymore.
Not when they can reach into their pocket and pull out a little device that (they say) can do most of what a confuser used to do. I could be very wrong, but that's my story...

Posted - 07/08/2016 : 12:26:50 PM I check the patch out 4 or 5 times a week, but often there's nothing new. It's sad to see that the last steel post was from me in March. |

Posted - 06/30/2016 : 12:56:24 PM "No Boddah Me" is played in G in G taropatch (see YouTube), but can be played in G tuning in C. You have to tinker with it. I like to play the F chord with my middle finger on the lowest D string on the 3rd fret and use the middle D string open (F6), then slide down 1 fret for the E7.

Posted - 06/30/2016 : 08:26:59 AM Kory Great to be back among the ohana. Question; I remember how to play Newpeppa Slack. Is No Bodda Me in the same tuning; open G played n the key of C? I want to figure that tune out. |

Posted - 06/27/2016 : 07:04:25 AM I, too, have been around but not playing as much due to extreme busy-ness trying to start a peony farm. All that hand work along with chain sawing 7-10 cords of firewood each year have taken a serious toll on my wrists and fingers. Now I can only play a few slow songs and have to quit. My son just left after a week long visit and he gave me some stretches that might help, so I am optimistic I can get back to where I can play in front of someone again. Dusty, sorry to hear your "voice" has been muted as well. In looking over the recent posts there are a few names I did not see; slkho (Rick Nieves), and Jesse tinsley come to mind. I hope to stay more connected in the future. Karl |

Posted - 05/17/2016 : 03:52:55 AM Nostalgia isn't what it used to be............sigh. Humans are on the constant quest for novelty, thus new tunes, new tunings. |

Posted - 05/17/2016 : 01:13:40 AM Also still here! I'm waiting for Andy to come out to Santa Cruz and do a concert at the Aloha Grill or something. (obligatory once every 10 years emoticon)
I feel like the late 90's thru mid 2000's were the resurgence of Hawaiian music in general, especially Kiho'alu.
Life happens, and many of us are still here but doing other things as well. As most things are cyclic, I'd expect to see the next surge of interest and enthusiasm for kiho'alu to begin building soon, with lot's of new players.
Aloha everyone ! |
