This guy knows how to Jus Press :)
Hope you don't mind if I post another exceptional (to me anyway) non-Hawaiian musician. Although I do not aspire to play like these guys, their creativity inspires me non-the-less.
This French guitarist, Alain, plays with about as much freedom as I have ever seen.
I was chuckling with glee near the end. He must be on some kind of strong medication. LOL
As entertaining as I found this to be, it is not melodious but stay with it to the end if you can--there is a "Slack Key" ending.

Yes, this is definitely some serious slacking (watch video at about 6:45). Has anyone seen Led do this? It certainly strikes me as something he would suddenly do in the middle of a song . . . while laughing merrily, of course, and saying "JUS PULL" . . .

After sitting in and watching Led play a lot, I've come to the conclusion that he backs himself into a corner musically or technically, and then, Houdini-like, escapes from it. The result is Led's great laugh. An experience at a picnic in Auburn, WA, with Led - we were playing, and he did an astounding run from body to nut on the middle strings. I, awestruck, stopped playing and stared at his guitar. He said" Wha's wrong, Jack?" I said "How did you DO that?" He gave the famous laugh and said "I dunno". He's always trying out new ideas, which keeps him excited about playing, imho. |

yeah those speed metal guitarists. most of em realy miss the point. I know, I'm one of them. lol Well I used to be into a lot of technical speed stuff, and was learnig the bumbble bee song. As fast as the playing is, it got totaly boring just as quickly. gimme a sunny lanai, a ukulele, and a couple of chords anyday.
I'll be happy to pigeon-hole it.
Trust me its not jus pressin at all, its years and years of hours and hours of rehearsed and calculated practice and scale and music theory knowledge generaly. This is not music. its fretboard racing.
I've gotten more out of my few year playing hawaiian music, emotionaly and spiritualy, than I did in all the years I practiced that stuff. Its still fun to play fast stuff,(when I'm up to that) but if it is always done for 'sport' , or to show off your fancy finger skills, instead with artistic expression and purpose, personaly I just don't find that very appealing.

I am not sure if this guy is jus' pressin' or what. I am not sure I would call it music, but then again, I am always looking to pigeon-hole and put things in their proper place.

If I recall, that's Led's saying, passed on from his Uncle Fred Punahoa. It was the title of a 1985 Hoku-winning album with I Kona and is now the name of Led's own production company.
Here's one version of the story, from the liner notes "Mauna Loa Slack Key" on the "Led Live" CD:
"When I was young my uncle Fred told me you can play slack key in Standard tuning. He said, 'It's easy, jus' press the right strings.' 'Jus' press' was something he would always tell us when we'd ask him a question. One time when we were playing I asked him, 'Uncle Fred, what key is this?' He told me, 'Boy, no worry what key, jus' press.'"

Plenty members here quote Led as saying "Jus Press".
I have assumed to know what it means since I have been a member.
