that is very nice :

here is a news report on his work and passing.

I didn't know he was the one who designed and names the Hokule'a, wow and he passed on the anniversery of its launch. I had read about the ship some time ago when I was learning the song. Very inspiring.

Here is a stunning tribute to Herb Kawainui Kane. It was made by Robert Manu Gay.

that is terrible what they have done to Hi'ilawe!
I have read now about so many places on the islands where the watersheds have been abused to the point of this kind of distruction ,the greed and irrisponsibility, it is sickening. Bless you for fighting to restore what you could.

Herb Kane was, of course, raised in Waipi'o.

My favorite painting of his has always been "Hi'ilawe", which I have always interpreted as Sam Li'a playing his song of the same name on his porch- the house is certainly in the proper location...

Also used for another album cover.

I think albums ought to be brought back partly because of the art work.

I've never hear the original, of course, but I've heard his grandson play it, and about a thousand other versions. Gabby, of course, does my favorite, and I have to say the worst I've ever heard is the one recently posted here several times..

I spent ten years fighting for the restoration of Hi'ilawe and Hakalaoa falls after Hamakua Sugar cut off Hakalaoa stream. Sadly, by the time the stream was restored, a combination of circumstances related to the diversion had destroyed the integrity of the bottom of the first pool in Hi'ilawe you see in the painting, and now it takes some serious flow before enough water enters the pool to overflow it- most goes directly into the ground. The watershed of Hakalaoa was bulldozed during this time also, so the legendary Hi'ilawe falls, highest in Hawai'i and one of the highest in the world, now only exists during periods of heavy rainfall.

Another great loss to the world, and to Hawaiians in particular...
