When there are few people in the area with whom to play Hawaiian music, well, I guess you just have to take matters in your own hands. You hve to plant the seeds and grow your jam partners. This is Paul and our little 9 yr. old hula sister, Deepti at our house on July 4th.

And on the American celebration of Independence Day, no less, representing what more than two centuries of immigration has done to enhance our nation.

This picture exemplifies why most of us here play music, Hawaiian-style or other. Not for awards, nor fame, nor financial compensation; those are nice benefits, sure - but seeing a new generation interested in the arts that we learned from the generations that came before us? Nothing beats it.

And Deepti's `ohana is from India. She even can do hula kahiko and chant the `oli.

That's how you do it. "Hold on to what you love with an open hand."
Before I found the Hawaiian community here in Seattle, my Bluegrass buddies would play a few Hawaiian tunes with me.

PS: They were playing and singing "Na Hale O Naue"
