Posted - 07/17/2011 : 11:31:34 AM ...I was recently driving (holo-holo) around San Diego w/ PuaHo, and past by this huge field with a hill on it....I see it pretty regular actually and pictured myself playing slack-key out there in the middle of nowwhere...just strumming along. I still haven't done it yet, but its a nice thought just the same....then I thought, (aha moment)...this would be a great idea to have a photo contest of anyone playing their guitar (prefabley slack key) in the most unusual places...it be cool!!!. Andy, maybe you can structure something along those lines and give out a prize. Now if you all want to get a good idea of it, click onto Karl Monetti's profile pic, and you'll see what I mean. You all may be already thinking of neat scenarios right now? Now remember, these photos must be somewhat creative. I wouldn't recommend any underwater photos like a popular rock group has done recently, but something original/creative/different/etc... I have to find me a farm w/ cows...I have an idea aleady. hmmmmmmmmm?

Posted - 07/27/2011 : 1:00:13 PM The el-kabong bit brings back fond memories of hours wasted in front of the boob tube on Saturday mornings. :) |

Posted - 07/27/2011 : 10:40:30 AM That is Paul's new VoyageAir folding travel guitar. It is really quite the gadget! Sounds pretty good too (but I like his Taylor better or his dad's 1930's era Slingerland nylon string). But at least he won't el-kabong me ontop the head in the airport. I cannot, however, promise that his shorts won't fall to his ankles like before.

Posted - 07/27/2011 : 09:38:36 AM Hee, that is a cute picture Auntie! I could use a bit of that msyelf...way too much computer time vs. real-world time. Crazy I know. |

Posted - 07/27/2011 : 08:49:05 AM Being the old futs that we are, Paul and I indulge in cardiac rehab three days a week. Paul cannot go long without a guitar in his hands. Every once in a while, he treats the folks at the Marymount Hospital Cardiac Rehab program to some Hawaiian music. Sometimes he takes his `ukulele, too.

Posted - 07/24/2011 : 12:36:44 PM Dobro indeed! That my dear lady is a National squareneck tricone, beloved instrument of Sol Ho'opi'i and Sam Ku West among others. So a suit is entirely appropriate attire when you're playing one. Or at least when you're trying to pull off a vintage studio portrait effect. :)
Thanks for the compliments. Funny about the weather here - until yesterday it's been cool and cloudy all spring and summer. Sitting by the window in that getup caused a certain amount of what ya might call discomfort with the temp hovering around 85. |

Posted - 07/24/2011 : 11:41:48 AM Now wait just a minute, Mike. Not that I am the fashion police......BUT....it is just wrong to be wearing a suit and tie whilst playing a dobro. I guess unless you are playing Pachelbel's Canon, that is. The instrument is so cool looking! And you look slick in that suit and tie! Probably not attire too often seen around these here parts, hahaha.

Posted - 07/22/2011 : 1:05:40 PM The instrument Unko Paul is playing may be an electric banduria (sp?), a Philipino instrument. David Apollon, the famous Jazz mandolinist of the 1930s travelled with a Philipino banduria orchestra. Very cool stuff, BTW. (can check'em on YouTube). |
