Wake up, wake up! Time to start this week with some fine Hawaiian music. There are some great ones on the list this week. Aside from the Makaha Sons of Ni`ihau featuring Skippy that Kawika has shared with us, I am most excited about the first two videos on the list. These are pretty rare finds, but thanks to our new friend Charles, he shares them with us. They are two videos by the Kanahele `ohana from Ni`ihau. "Aloha Ka Poe`e Koa O Ni`ihau" is special to me because we were taught the story behind the mele by Uncle Kihei de Silva and taught to dance it by Aunty Mapuana de Silva at our hula workshop this past January. The hula was a gift to Aunty Mapu by the Kanahele family who shared with her the very subtle hula ways of the Ni`ihau traditions. It is a great story about the Loran navigation station on Ni`ihau during World War II. Some great history -- you can google it if you like more history. It is a fun hula to dance when we have to make the moves to get the generator fired up in order to make the daily call to check in with Kaua`i. Great stuff.
