...it started with a dream.

I was in my front yard and it's raining like mad. A huge polynesian looking man walks up to me, gives me a good natured grin looks at one of the very large puddles that formed and says "I should have brought my surf board" and walks away.

very soon after, on a raininy day during a trip to the Library, I came across Keola Beemers book on Slack Key guitar. Mabee it was the dream, or the rain, or the fact that I've always had an interest in Hawaiian and that culture, I decided to check out the book. I've been hooked ever since :) that was about 2 years ago. before that all I knew about Hawaiian music was stuff like steel guitar and Don Ho

I'd actualy started playing guitar some 20 years ago, but have always been a metal and rock guitarist. I was infected with lyme disease from a tick bite back in the early 90's before they realy knew about it and as it's a very incapacitating disease, it has been a very hard struggle. Its made it difficult doing many things let alone play a guitar.

Ki ho 'alu has been a bright light in all of this. The music is so fun, beautiful, peaceful, it takes me a away to place of aloha, where there is no sickness, no doctors, no bills, no music critics. It has been very healing for me.

I think the figure in my dream was a good omen and a representation of the music, a big good-natured presence in my life despite the rain.

I am look forward to participating in the forum, there is a lot of great info on taropatch.net mahalo for creating it.

I heard about New Jersey from my grandmother. Someplace east of Phoenix, I think. Sort of like Brigadoon. Only shows up every 100 years or something like that. Supposed to have lots of Hawaiian mana, but only when Andy is playing.

what a warm amnd wonderful welcome as I've never gotten on any other board, mahalo!

@ Wanda ah I think I have found a kindred spirit ;)

@ andy No I didn't know you were from NJ too, poor soul :P lol thats great!

Now I don't feel so out of place. Though I guess I am still very much a Haole, please have patience with me while I learn the ropes and lingo. My Bassist (from my metal band) is teaching me some Hawaiian.

Welcome to Taro Patch. You make Auntie get all teary-eyed with your story. I, too, well know the healing powers of Hawaiian music. You describe it very eloquently about being fun, peaceful, beautiful. I love this music. Aue, though, I still get the doctor bills. (Sigh).

E komo mai. Come and talk story with us now and again.
