 Happy new year to youall I live in california now but was born in North Carlina. Started trying to play music after and accident retired and disabled me in 2001 at 60 Started on the Uke but coudn't find anyone to teach or play with went to mandolin-5-4-6 banjos, bluegrass,country, jazz,blues,pop always felt like I was just typing notes was given and old Ohau guitar and walla bought some books and started to feel the music it was easyer for me to learn becouse the chords and notes are similar to banjo now I feel like I'm playing music have gotten to know lots or nice people and love the music it is relaxing and stimulating for me at the same time thanks for this sight and may youall play well fred |

thats interestign story Fred , how you started on uke and came full circle to Hawaiian music after learnign the other instruments and style.
and about the similarities with your 'roots' music Wanda. I guess these style mentioned are all different types of cultural folk music.

Welcome, Fred!
There is a similar feel between the music of your and my roots in the mountains with the deceptively simple melodies of traditional Hawaiian music. The steel guitar is a prime example of the way the music shares in sound and feeling.
It is good to hear that you have used the music for both relaxation and stimulation, as that is what I think is so wonderful about Hawaiian music.
I am from West Virginia, now living in Ohio. My husband, Paul, who is also on this forum as rendesvous1840, plays 5 string banjo, old-time style, as well as 6 and 12 string guitars, mountain dulcimer and `ukulele. I am learning `ukulele and hula. Paul plays some slack key guitar and will be playing a few things this Saturday at our hula workshop.
