I have a twin neck console steel tuned C6--E9 and have been taking weekly lessons for 10 months. I already understood chords, relations from playing Ukulele, banjos and slack key guitar. This thing is missing with my mind!!! Got the the major chords down and somewhat the minors and 7th? With each neck having 24 frets and 8 strings. There are 176 notes per neck I'm having a fit?? Sending time on this thing has effected my playing on the other instruments and at this point I sure ain't taking it tooo Jams. So far I seem able to play Steel guitar rag, Pearly shells, and Blue hawia sort off where they sound right Instructor has been writing tab for me. Short of quiting does anyone have any suggestions??? I really want to learn! I have medical problems and kinda need to sit in order to play anything. Any help would be appreciate any help!!! My instructor has played all over the world is 87 and was a pro for 45 years or so.  |

Mahalo to those who have responded (Retro) I didn't understand your message? My instructor told me yesterday that it took him 3 years to get to the point that I'm at now!! Patence is not my forta! He also said that I could play back up at this point but needed a drum machine to inprove my timing for solos. So far we only play with tab. Does anyone use music nots for there music or convert to tab? or memory? Mahalo and happy holidays to all fred |

Fred - contact Alan Akaka through is school Ke Kula Mele - http://kekulamele.com/. He gives lessons via Skype, so it doesn't matter where you live. Steel guitar is not about playing all over the neck, it's about playing in "pockets" around the "I" chord (C in the key of C) and the "V" chord (G in the key of C) by using slants and 2 note chords. In any kind of 6th tuning (C6, G6, D6, E6, etc) the 6 and 1 notes of the I chord (A and C for C) are the 3 and 5 notes for the IV chord (F in the Key of C), and G is 2 frets up, so the basic chords are all within 2 frets of the I chord, and so forth. I haven't found a book or DVD that adequately teaches this. If I knew where you live, I might know a good steeler for you. I live in Seattle, and I travel a lot up and down the West Coast. Also, join the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assosciation (HSGA) and the Steel Guitar Forum. They have a section on non-pedal steels where you can ask y our questions and get a lot of good answers. |
