For the last year I've been enjoying teaching Sam and Sam jr. Slack Key and was stunned to learn that Sam's grandfather was Joseph Kekuku. So I took out my steel and finally started working the gist since my great grand father learn the steel from Joseph Kekuku before moving to the mainland. Tutu John Kauli'a was noted for composing 'E Liliu E' on the steel guitar in honor of Queen Liliuokalani. The words taken from his cousin, Hula Grandmaster Antone Kao'o both of whom worked with the Queen in making Hawaiian Music during her confinement under the Palance during the overthrow, the Kingdom of Hawaii.

wow, i've been doing research on kekuku because he's also an ancestor of mine, according to my apuakehau & haupu ohana family history book his name is included there. my branch has been rooted in san diego for many years now since my great grandma came over with her naval husband and was a founding member of the local hui o hawaii. i feel full of pride and love every time i hear great hawaiian music and stories like this. thanks for sharing!

Hahaha!

When Patti told me she met Sam Choy, I kept trying to remember what instrument he was known for. Sheesh, I hate this growing-old stuff...

Give Patti a hug for me and tell her that all her Santa Cruz friends hope she is having a great time.

Patti Maxine, a steel guitarist from Santa Cruz was visiting Kona this week. I introduced her to Sam Choy.
Lunch was great, but Sam turned down the opportunity for a steel guitar lesson!

@ Noeau, yes, my grandfater's brother James Kauli'a served as the Emissary to the Queen to delivered the petitions to President Cleveland and then later to President McKinley....took him a long journey from Oahu to Washington DC by boat and horse. Don

The more we learn, the more we learn that there is more for us to learn. (Or something li'dat.)

Thanks for including us in this knowledge, Don, as well as the music.

Wow! If we only knew 1/2 of the history that we all carry, we'd be blown away. Cool, Don! Good you get connections like that!
