It was mentioned on the facebook page of Jeffrey Apaka that his class mate Fred Lunt has passed away. Fred was a fine steel guitar player. A student and friend of the great David "Feet" Rogers. Fred recorded with the group Na Pali and spent time on tour with Taj Mahal.

Wow sad news. I met the man at a memorial for another mutual friend. We jammed and it was nice to meet someone like him.

So sad to hear this. Fred was a real estate agent(in addition to a great musician)and helped us when we bought a home on Oahu a few years ago. He became a friend and my husband spoke to him just a few days before he passed and he told him that he was battling a rare form of blood cancer. He expected to be able to live with it for a long time but said he was going through a flare up and wasn't feeling so good. A nice kind man he was. Our condolences to the family.

Sussi and Gerry.

Here is a wonderful example of the steel guitar of Fred Lunt. To me it really demonstrates the influence of his teacher and friend David "Feet" Rogers.

Sad!! A real nice guy, and an upholder of a tradition.

No Julie, don't know the details. I last spoke with Fred early in Feb. He was complaining about a terrible flu and some shoulder pain, as I recall.

Oh no Norman, do you know what happened?

I took a steel class from Fred at Aloha Music Camp when it was on Molokai. It was so much fun.

One day I was studying in another class and out of the corner of my eye I saw this grey-haired fellow, looked like a ha'ole, jumping into the surf and swimming way out. I just knew it was going to be a problem as we were warned that the next stop out there in the tides was Tahiti!

But no, he swam around, then came back in and rinsed off in the shower on the beach. It was Fred!

Phew, I breathed a sigh of relief. Figured if he grew up on the islands he would know his way around the surf...

But how sad that he passed on, I didn't think he was very old. Then, of course, I don't think I'm very old, either.

Julie
