Steel guitat is a Hawiian invention it is the sole of Hawwiian Music Do the holie's have to reivent this sound??? This is the sole of hawie and yet we only hear it in western music. I'm white from the islands from the south east coast but I have studied and taken lelsens on the STEEL for a year and a half. Must we holie's continue the and studie the SOLE music of the magic Islands Please Please help me Show peaple that the Island music is not just ukulele and slack key the STEEL is REAL and the MUSIC of the Hawiie  where it was STARTED   |

I worked in Charlotte NC for four months back in 2000, and used it as a jumping off point for a couple of vacation weeks at the Outer Banks - pleasant memories endure. |

Well Folks I was born off the big Island off Carolina I got out of the 8 grad we didn't have elelectric till I was 6 or so high school was on the main land until I was 14 and moved to californin had a real tought time in school here but got my deplomia in 1958 so I can't spell and talk well but as Jonhie Reb I know how to fight and shoot catch fish and run a trap line and live on the land old time music is what I grew up on and i like hawiiln music something like home tme music Now tell me what's going on with the lap steel Ya I love to come to the Islands but can't offord it! Got enoff to pay rent food and make my own shine and plants Californis sucks but thats what I was delt and so make the best?l police hate me becouse I don't fear them and can out shoot them. LONG LIVE THE OLD SOUTH

"Hawiian? hawie? lelsens? holie's? Hawiie?" Fred! You need to slow down when you type, brah! You might consider spending several months on the Big Island. That will unwind you and give you a chance to both practice your steel and maybe teach a few youngsters to play the steel too. Think about it!

Does a flat fish really have much of an underside? Then again, I suppose it matters whether the fish is flat to the vertical or horizontal plane.
Hey, Fred. I don't think you have to worry at all about steel guitar disappearing from Hawaiian music, it's alive and well. It's always been a daunting instrument from the perspective of most beginners (`ukulele & guitar are more ubiquitous, portable and "friendly" in appearance), but those who love its sound will always pursue it.
And there are plenty of non-haole players keeping it alive - the oft-mentioned Alan Akaka being the first to spring to my mind. But as to the ethnicity of the players - well, when I listen, I just can't hear the specific skin-color of the notes... |
