Sometime ago, there was a discussion about traveling with guitars. I have a Rickenbacher Fry Pan that I would like to take on the plane, but honestly, I don't think they would let me take it on with me because it could be used as a deadly weapon (!) Think aluminum baseball bat...
On the other hand, if I check it in, and some dishonest TSA agent spots it on the X-ray machine, it will surely disappear. It is a priceless vintage instrument, I don't want to lose it.
I do remember something about being able to get documentation from TSA that would allow me to carry it on. Does anyone remember anything about that thread?

Hey Keaka,
Guess I'll be seeing you at the Maui Steel Guitar Festival, but I won't have Queen of Steel Patti Maxine with me, unfortunately. Looking forward to some of those incomparably sweet notes!

I've found that, as long as you can show the gate people that your steel fits in an overhead, you can bring it on board, even though the shape is not in the "suitcase" format. My D8 Stringmaster fills the bill. When I went back to Joliet for the HSGA Festival, Alaska folks let me put it in the closet. That was way cool! Hawaiian Air is good, too. I have had trouble with Southwest and United - United especially. In any case, if I have trouble, i gate check it to be picked up, like a stroller, at the gate. |

I've taken both my frypan and my bakelite to Hawaii at different times with no problem. I guess when I leave from our local airport, that those folks are a bit more intelligent than most of those TSA people.
Only thing I've heard lately is that some airplanes have shorter over-head carry-on spaces, and the instrument may not fit up there. What I read was that Airbus airplanes were the ones with the shorter space. Both of my Ricks are short scale, so a long scale may not fit anyway.
I just avoid any trips that use Airbus airplanes anyway. (it's a personal thing too) I'll take Boeing when I fly.
