No, not Chevys or Fords. I'm building a solid body lap steel and need info on what types of pickup(s) to install. Actually I've been in the act of building it for 3 years and I am certain I asked this question before, but, the rest of you old guys will understand my lack of retention of any information you may have given me.

A good player can make a bad pickup sound good. Unfortunately, it doesn't work the other way around. |

If you want the Rickenbacher sound, contact Rick Aiello, who makes really good Rick style pickups. He has a website. For the nahe nahe sound of folks like Jules Ah See, who played a Magnatone, or Barney Issacs, who played a Fender Stringmaster, there are a lot of good pickups out there - George L, for one. Konabob builds his own steels, so he would know better than me. |

while I have no answers for you Karl, I would be interested to see what posts.
Probably depends on what sounds you want.
I am very enamored with the old sound, like on Gabby albums...which many players still can put out.
Not only wonder about pickups (wrappings) but also what good little (tube?) amps best complement the desired sounds you seek.
I once called the "old" style sound, like Gabby's to "music from Mars", which is not a slam.
It just had to be the dreamiest, surreal sound back in early radio days. And probably what intoxicated so many who never traveled there.
I have an old teachers notes about teaching HSG in Denver in the 20's or so.
Something like 20 cnets a week! And probably could buy some old ones that were "hummers", and we'd love to find now.
I love how music allows all of us to travel to other times, and to far off places through music--quite affordably, and always an instant "point of refuge" in a sometimes mad world, depending on where we focus eyes, ears and thoughts.
Of course, Konabob may have some good info on this as soon as he drops by.
AND, if you go back down to The Fish Hopper in Kona again to interview Bob, call me and I'll come take notes!
That was a great place to wrap up to our recent trip.
Also, don't claim "old guy" status yet--I like to think we're just at the BEGINNING of that part of the deal. Besides, your Memory may just be "Hapa-Frozen", since you're migrating between Alaska and Kona.
