Hi.
Glad to be here.
Would it be nice if a ukulele player and guitarist got together
and produced a CD of backing tracks played slowly to enable learning
steel players & guitarists to play along with, it seems to me that it
would be a great help having that environment to play in. such as:
Blue Hawaii.
Song of the islands.
Pagan love song.
Sweet Leilani.
Aloha Oe.
Moana Chimes.
Mama E.
Sand
and perhaps many of the slack key favorites that are so popular
with guitarists today.
I would like to know what others think of this idea, as I feel that
many players are looking for tracks to play along with.
Just a thought.

Ah Yes...
It was "Slack Tracks" that I remember (not Mark Nelson).
Of course, Mark Nelson has lots of other Slack Key instructional material.
So "Slack Tracks" is some stuff you should check out, as Chunky Monkey indicates.
I think I remember Don. Last time I saw him was at Led Concert in Sunnyvale. He was going around with a digital-recorder-microphone interviewing performers for a podcast/blog, if I remember correctly.

I have noted what you have said and if nothing comes from my attempt
to purchase Patrick's DVD & Tabs I shall contact you, what I am trying
to achieve is a collection of my favorite steel guitar numbers & also
slack key, Tabs and Backing tracks for personal use, I am making up some
of my own tabs at the moment for steel guitar as there are few about in
open E, a tuning I am comfortable with, G for slack key, I'll see what
transpires.

I can't speak for Mark Nelson but for sure I know that backing tracks were made and sold in 2005 - 2006. I did them with Don Narup (deceased) and Patrick Landeza. Slack Tracks had backing tracks for 12 Slack Key standards and included tab. They originally came in three volumes and each volume had four songs with four tracks each. Two of the tracks were standard speed, one with lead guitar and one without. The other two were slowed down with and without lead guitar. The complete recording had lead guitar, rhythm guitar, uke, base and steel guitar.
We sold about 200 sets before Don passed away and that exhausted the physical supply. When Don died, the masters were lost. I still have the tab and the MP3 versions of the songs, but I think Patrick Landeza may have reengineered them and may be selling them.
Before Don died, I was offering to email the mp3 copies and the tab for a $7/per song donation to the Kauai Food Bank. I could still do that if Patrick is not selling the packages. If you can't get through to Patrick or if he is not doing it anymore, email me and we'll work something out. I'm not interested in making any money on this, but I theoretically still hold some (in part) the copyrights to the product (as does Patrick). |

Thanks guys, I will look into these options, I like Marks playing,and
is readily available, I have looked at the BIAB software and I must
confess that I find it a little complicated.

I make my own tracks using Band In A Box (aka BIAB). They have very good string bass, rhythm guitar and ukulele tracks. Of course they are idiosyncratic to me and my playing, so they probably won't do for anyone else. I usually have other people playing with me at gigs and festivals. Alan Akaka's KE Kula Mele has some great tab with excellent backing tracks. Also, go to the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association website and ask around there - same with Steel Guitar forum. |

Actually, someone did just that a few years ago, but not for your specific list of songs.
Maybe 5 to 8 years ago??
I think it was Mark Nelson, so you can search the TaroPatch archives for "Backing Tracks" or "Mark Nelson" or synonyms. Also go to Mark Nelson's website and see if he still lists anything.
