Anyone know of rudy Wairata? I know he is a famous steel guitar player and an awesome one, and that he passed in 81'. Where can I find his music, I like to learn his style of steel. |

Oh my goodness! That article brought back some memories. I wish my parents were still alive, they could have told me all kinds of things about Rudy. Both my folks were Symphony musicians, and they played and recorded with lots of different people. One of them was George De Fretes, mentioned in this article. I do remember as a small child hearing a steel guitar somewhere. Maybe that's why, many years later, I respond to it so strongly.
I remember parties in the tropical nights, little paper lanterns strung between the trees, we kids trying to catch fireflies, and guitar music and singing in the background. I must have been 3 or 4.
Although my folks were Dutch, they mixed it up with all the other nationalities that whirled around in those magical tropical islands. And true to form, most people who got a chance of a higher education would sail to Holland and get their degrees there. Looks like that's exactly what Rudy did, right around the time we moved to The Hague also.
Thanks for giving me a glimpse into my own past. What a treat...

Man, it's hard to track these guys down. In the heyday of Hawaiin steels (1940 -1970), there wer a ton of them. I'm always surprised when I uncover one, listed (by chance, it seems) in liner notes. I've heard of Rudy, though. I'll ask Alan Akaka when I see him tonorrow for my lesson and get back to you. |
