2-6p July 4th, 2010, Plaza Stage Waikiki Beach Walk
featuring Hawaii's great and up and coming Steel Guitarists.

Ten days after the 1st Annual Waikiki Beach Walk Steel Guitar Festival in Waikiki, Uncle Ron Kanahele was the guest artist for the Aloha International Steel Guitar Club Convention in Winchester Indiana.
The Convention held July 14-16 was outstanding. Uncle Ron shared much of his aloha among the people and a lot of aloha in his playing and singing. When he sang Kanaka Wai Wai tears came to his eyes and many people were moved to tears.
I count Uncle Ron as a special aikane.

It is inspiring to see the rumblings of a steel revival in Hawaii. First the Henry Allen Festival, and now this wonderful event.
Wish I could be there, too; but at least I'll be in the proper time zone.
Don't forget Alana Akaka is teaching at the Aloha Camp in February. I'm doubling my practice time till then!

Ahwe! No can stay dere! It will be fabulous, garanz! Alan is an amazing steeler and a great techer, if you want to learn Hawaiian steel, or uke, or rhythm guitar or upright bass, for that matter. I owe so much to him for teaching me how to play Hawaiian and as a wonderful friend. |

Music: Men of steel (guitar) to assemble July 4 in Waikiki
The First Annual Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival, assembling some of Hawaii’s top men of steel, will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. July 4 at Waikiki Beach Walk.
The event will be part of the Outrigger Enterprise Group’s Na Mele No Na Pua Music Heritage program, staged in partnership with Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assn., and Territorial Airwaves, with support for Ke Kula Mele Hawaii.
Slack key is a unique, nahenahe sound, characteristic of traditional Hawaiian musicians from eras past. “There is nothing that brings Hawaii to mind as quickly as the sound of a steel guitar,” said Alan Akaka, renowned Hawaiian steel guitarist, educator and director of Ke Kula Mele Hawaii. The day’s agenda:
• 2 to 2:35 p.m. — Greg Sardinha and Po`okela.
• 2:45 to 3:20 p.m. — Ronald Kanahele with student Timi Abrigo and the Abrigo Ohana.
• 3:30 to 4:05 p.m. — Jeff Au Hoy and the Jeff Teves Trio.
• 4:15 to 4:50 p.m. — Alan Akaka and The Islanders with student Kilipaki (Vaughan).
• 5 to 5:35 p.m. — Casey Olsen and the Hiram Olsen Trio.
• 5:40 to 6 p.m. — Jam session, with Alan Akaka, Casey Olsen, Greg Sardinha, Jeff Au Hoy, and Ronald Kanahele.
A free seminar, at 1 p.m., precedes the afternoon concerts. Akaka will speak on the “History of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar” and Dr. Neil Scott will provide tips on “How to Build a Steel Guitar.” |

Just read the lineup on Facebook, and itʻs going to be a great day!! Especially exciting is the listing of the two "up and coming" players. I just saw Timi on YouTube and heʻs killer, and Kilipaki Vaughan will turn a lot of heads. Sadly Iʻll be back at sea when this all happens, but hopefully someone will get this down and posted on YouTube |
