I got a Gold Star Weissenborn a couple of years ago, and came up with a variation on the G tuning. I realized that I wasn't using the low D very much, so I removed it, then moved the remaining strings over one notch and added a light (.090) String for the 1st and tuned it to a high G. I found that it works really well, and opens up the high end. With some slant bar and other tricks, I can now play in G, C or D with much better results.
Any thoughts? |

The tuning mentioned above is a G6, since the E is the sixth note of the G scale. Sixth tunings are very useful, whether it's a G6 (Konabob, seldomfed and others), C6 (a huge number of steelers, Hawaiian and non), E6 (Don Helms, Jerry Byrd and other country pickers) or D6, or any other 6th tunings. Then, of course, there's the B11 tuning, which is an A6 on the top strings and a B7 on the bottom 5 - B F# B F# A C# E. Alan Akaka told me that this tuning comes from A6. I've posted a lot about these tunings over the years. |

I also use seldomfed's tuning. On an electric steel it very "Waikiki" sounding. I also sometimes tune the low D down to a C which makes a strange and wonderful C something tuning. |

Low to high I use G, D, E, G, B, D - so I can do some BG licks, and still use the 6th tuning tricks I know. I'm not a big Bluegrasser, but I do a bit. I like this tuning alot - yes you do need to adjust string guages so that the 5th string B can be cranked up to D. The 4th string E usually will go up easy. I keep the G on the bass cause I like to do Travis style rhythm picking sometimes.
Another variation that is easy to do on the basic G dobro is simply either raise the 4th string to E, or lower the 6th string to E - now you have G6th tuning. Those both lend themselves to some nice tunes. - aloha, chris |
