Aloha,
I have an old Favilla C-5 classical guitar that sounds wonderful, but smells like a damp cigarette. Anyone have any advise on how to make this guitar smell as good as it sounds? |

Do Favillas sound bad when you are stoned? I may have to water a cup someday soon so I don't think I can check this out for myself.
Thank you for all the advice. I once purchased an old SUV on a warm day when all the windows were rolled down only to learn later that it had the unmistakable scent of damp Rottweiler. Baking soda helped a bit, but it took two Summers to bake the dog out of that vehicle, and even then a damp day could bring it all back.
I'll let you know what happens with coffee grounds and orange peels.
I live a few miles from the Pacific, and my air conditioning comes from opening the windows, so hopefully I can get by without a humidifier.

What Andy said....but I would advise against anything that would dry the guitar out too much....an old guitar like that might start to crack if the wood gets too dry.
Here in Hawaii, the humidity is usually such that we don't have to worry too much about hydrating our guitars. But on the mainland, with cold temps and forced air heating, or hot weather and the AC on full blast, the humidity inside your house can drop very low, dry out the wood and cause microcracks to form---not good. Planet waves sells a good hydration system and a little monitoring device that I used when I lived in the midwest.

Thank goodness that smoking is banned from bars.
In the places I played, the stages were always elevated into the smoke. Our precious 15 min. breaks were like descending from a cloud and we really looked forward to taking them. |

Before I started playing in bars, I noticed that a lot of guitar cases smelled of tobacco smoke. Then I started playing full time in bars and "animal lodges - Elks, Eagles and moose", leaving my pedal steel set up all month, and the case left in the place, too. When I brought it home prior to our next gig, my case reeked! It took about 3 months of airing after I quit performing to get the stink out. |

Google "removing cigarette smoke smell" and you'll get tons of ideas. Seems like 100 things to try from putting orange peels inside your guitar to baking soda to vinegar. Try some of the things listed at http://www.stretcher.com/stories/03/03feb10b.cfm and let us know what worked best. But please keep the inside of your guitar dry! |

Air the thing out. My Dad used to stroll in a German restaurant back in the "pro-tobacco" days and had to air the box out for a couple days. Put a fan on it and pretend that it's a tropical breeze. |

Smoke a lot of marijuana around it?
It may take on a new scent ... or your perception of how it sounds will change.
