They're not that bad. I've had several students start on them, including Auntie Neej. They sell for about $90 from MF. They come with three legs, which is nice. But --- I bet you'll want something better as you get going. Rogue guitars are good if you're not sure you want to play steel. They intone well, and the pickup is ok. Make sure that you have an amp with reverb. Steels sound much better with the reverb set a 2 to 3 out of 10 - gives "presence", an elusive effect which makes a huge difference in the sound of a steel. |

I don't know about their guitrs but i own 2 of their basses a 4 and 5 string. They seem like very solid instruments and well made for thier low-end price range.
They have a mandolin and uke combo deal on Musician's friend that i've been pondering as I've been wanting to try those instruments. |

If it was playable, and wouldn't hurt someone's hands, and you use one of the string brands involved, you could give it away. I don't like to hurt some kids hands with some of the junk guitars I see on the bottom end of the price scale. If a person with years of playing experience can't play it, a new player can't learn on it.

The Rogue guitars are the cheapest of the cheap (that MF sells) and probably they probably sell for $35 or $40 by themselves. I might buy one for a kid as a first-time, beat-around guitar, but it's doubtful any player would be happy with it. I'm not a guitar snob, but at this price point, you'd probably be just as happy if you went to Walmart and bought a First Act guitar. I would say that truly playable guitars--accurate intonation, passable action, working truss rod, okay sound--start around $100. If you're buying the strings anyway, though, you could hang it on the wall or leave it stored in a camp trailer.
