I have the opportunity to purchase this model Takamine 12 string. Anyone have experience with it? I play slack key exclusively. I've never played a Takamine so I'm in the dark here. Anyone?

If he is bewitched he is in good company. I have seen these people all playing slack key on Takamine to some good results.
Makana
Bobby Moderow
Nathan Aweau (a 12 string as a matter of fact)
Dennis Kamakahi
Ned Kaapana
plus a bunch more that I can't think of off the top of my head.

I hope Takamine continues to be under rated though cause it means I can still pick up a fabulous used guitar for 1/3 the cost of a comparable "other name".

Got a question...

Last week I went to a Cello/Guitar duet and I asked the very talented guitar player what kind of guitar he was using. To my surprise he said it was a "Taka-mine".

How is Takamnine pronounced?
I have always pronounced it "Taka-me-nee" but I often hear it the other way.

Based on your wonderful feedback, I acquired said guitar (GAS in action).

I play slack key exclusively (don't know how to play anything else). I currently have one guitar, Taylor 814ce. Didn't quite know about doubling the strings, but ...

I am pleased to say that the Takamine has far exceeded my expectations. The action is very, very smooth - a little better than my Taylor which surprised me. Needless to say, I am ecstatic with the instrument.

Thanks.

Takamine did something amazing when they first appeared on the scene. They copied Martins but made them metric to get around the patents. They also knew that they could make sides out of plywood because that's the part of a guitar that has to be rigid. I had a D-28 copy with a solid spruce top and the rest plywood. It played wonderfully. Unfortunatly, it was stolen by a junkie friend of mine back in 1975. That, my friends, is one interesting story. Ask me about it when you see me. It takes longer than I can report here.

I have a takamine 6 string and I think it has a great neck and pick up. I upgraded the preamp to a japanese spec one (can't remember the model number) and it sounds even better.

Overall, I really like that guitar and play it more than any other guitar I have.

My Takamine 12 string is an older G series G335 and for the price, I think it sounds really nice. I spent $230 last year for mine and to me it sounds way better than some far more expensive guitars that I've played since then. I don't know anything about the model you were looking at, but I wish you good luck in your quest.

I have a Tak 12, not sure the model. that is true it has a very narrow neck for a 12 IMO but nice shape and good for smaller hands. the body is large though a bit to large for my taste. it has a good sound. also does seem very stable, despite the smaller neck. I haven't tryed slack key on mine yet, but was just listening to some stuff played on 12s and realy like the sound and was thinking about trying it. haven't played it in a while because my hands cant manage it any more but mabee with a very slacked tuning.... :)

Takamines have good points, great points and weak points, just like any guitar.
See the links below for more information.
The model you list has maple (probably laminated) back and sides with a solid spruce top. Very stable, should have a strong sound with some extra high end.
Plugged in, it will beat just about any other guitar out there due to the palathetic pickup and ct4b preamp.
The main thing to know about most Takamines, (the 6 sting versions, not the 12 string like this one)is that the width at the nut is quite narrow for fingerstyle...1 11/16. Lots of talented people play Takamines with this narrow width (Makana, Bobby Moderow) but it is not for everyone. This 12 string is probably 1 7/8 at the nut.
I own three Takamines and find them to be quite nice for the money but as always, each one and each player is different, so you should play it to find out.
