Great choice, learning this tune will give a lot of slack key vocabulary along with the sheer joy of the song.

Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net is a free tool that can change tempo among other features that are very helpful for those of us trying to learn tunes by ear from recordings. For instance, on the "Punahele" version of "Wai`anae Slack Key" Uncle Ray is tuned to taropatch but the root note is between F and F# - as I understand it this was his preferred pitch, he matched the guitar to his voice in the traditional way. Audacity can adjust pitch as well as tempo, so you can work on this song without having to retune your guitar. The program also gives you an easy way to make loops in the song, so you can focus on a small section, hear it and play along over and over.

There will be artifacts, however, in the tempo and pitch shifting. I've (so far) never found a program that can do these functions without impacting the sound quality.

If you do get Audacity, the beta 1.3+ version is recommended by the developers and by me.

Joka:

I'm new here so this has probably been mentioned in the forum but there's a program called the Amazing Slow Downer that works for me. Here's a link to their site:

I never actually bought the product. I'm still using the free downloadable demo copy.

Good luck!
