I've been playing on the 12th and 14th frets (Ā`wīvī) recently and after much difficulty decided to measure the guitar's action. The bottom of the sixth string is 11/64" above the twelfth fret. Based on some online research this seems to be very high. While I might be able to lower it myself, I think I'd like to take it to somebody. Is there anything I should be aware of? How low should I have it set? I don't have anything to use for comparison, and as a beginner my preferences will probably change/develope over time anyway. Would really appreciate any thoughts you may have!

I took my guitar to a luthier Saturday and got it back today. What a difference!!! He would have lowered the action even more, but it turns out that the neck is defective from the fatcory, with an up-angle. Still, things that were pretty difficult before are now (almost) easy. Hammers, slides, barres...before it was hit or miss, now it's mostly hits. Since I'm not pressing as hard there's less squeaking and my fretting is smoother...not quite nahenahe but closer to it than before! I had ordered John Pearse slack key strings to be delivered direct to the luthier; unfortunately they sent the 500XL extra light set, which is now on the guitar. Think I'll replace them first chance. Also probably start looking for a new guitar. |

Don't do anything drastic. A good guitar shop can adjust the set up of your guitar. Depending on the age of the guitar it could be anything from a simple truss rod adjustment to a complete neck reset. A guitar technician will be able to tell you quickly what it needs.

There are four areas that impact action at the 12th fret. They are nut height, saddle height, neck curve (called relief), and neck angle.
