Posted - 12/02/2011 : 12:18:10 PM One of the truly inspirational people I have met in my life.
Recieved this message from Andy Andrews of The 'Ukulele Club Of Santa Cruz.
"Aloha to friends of the ukulele the world over-
It is with a heavy heart that I pass this information on.
Our great friend and grandfather of the Ukulele, Bill Tapia passed last night in his sleep at age 103
Volumes of stories and praise will be written for our wonderful friend, and many will do so at a later time, but for now all our prayers and thoughts are with Bill, his family and many friends."

Posted - 12/06/2011 : 07:43:13 AM Bill will surely be missed. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times. Bill is the only double signee on my autograph guitar...once at 93, the other at 100. We went to see him at the California Surf Film Festival down here, but alas,he fell ill and had to postphone, I was hoping to get his next autograph at 103!! He's now strumming with God.

Bills passing is now appearing on the front webpage of the BBC, here is a link to the story page:

Interesting that the headstock of the Uke he is holding in the picture looks like a "Fluke" brand.

Posted - 12/02/2011 : 3:50:19 PM I had the joy of sharing the stage with him on a number of occasions since 2004; what a bundle of energy he was - the rest of us always had to hustle to keep up with him!
Every time I play "Little Grass Shack," I hear his "asides" in my head.
Aloha `oe, Tappy. |

We saw him a couple of times at the Northern California Ukulele Festival and, besides still being a pretty good player, he was a first class gentleman.
Sorry to see him gone.
