On UkeleleUnderground, there is a beginners section, - place for stupid questions. May I Have a beginners thread? A place for stupid questions?

First of all, this is fun, if I were 40 years younger, you could count me in for the future. As for now, I'm 58 and don't expect anything from me but questions.

Secondly ... the coolest guys, - this is what I love about slack key, - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODhTr096FME&feature=player_embedded

My first question, - the vamp... The wamp in Radio Hula. I bought a book of Mark Hanson because it said it had the sheet for Kaapanas Radio Hula. The better thing in Kaapanas recording is the early vamp.. after the 'triolos' in D7, Kaapana has a vamp from G to D. Hanson does not record that on the sheet. Sir Duke (on YouTube) does an other figure. What exactly does Kaapana do there? Because I feel it is a major part of the characteristics of the tune.

First stupid question.

Oh yes. Though, the reason I started to run it extensively, was C in Taro Patch. Tries to follow your fingers, dear friend. Understand your chords.

The more I run it, the more I got caught by the tune.

I didn't know, nor did I read, at least not carefully. Thanks.

"If you keep pickin' at it, it'll never heal." I was fooling around with a Blues riff in taropatch and the bridge of "Nupepa Slack Key" fell off of the guitar so I figured out the "A" part. The descending run in the bridge shows Aunty Rochelle DelaCruz during a deadline for "The NW Hawai'i Times". I played it for bradda Don Kaulia and told that to him. He laughed and said, "You get kaona in da melody!" I'm glad folks like it.

Some of them are - they will say that they are "original" in the comment on YouTube.

Kory keeps asking people to write lyrics for it

Oh? So it's my man's own piece? What I learn.

Radio Hula on various recordings on the tube, as well as more professional recordings, and my nosing into it it all, has learnt me a lot. The different sections, the alternating between them, the freedom in doing so, every man his own figures, or set of figures, - still with respect for the basic of the tune. Sometimes this, other times that. I've learnt the Radio Hula was written in the 30's. Still, the piece I'd learnt to love is Kaapana's.

Is Kory's pieces on the tube mostly written from the ground and up?

We play this one together all the time, it's such a fun piece (and since I wrote for "da pepa" during it's five-year existence, it has special meaning for me). Kory keeps asking people to write lyrics for it, but I like it best as an instrumental - there is kaona in the music itself.

I was around at the conception of "Newpepe". In summary, it's a tune that plays around with the circle of fifths. Fun on steel, too.

Ambrosius:

I quite agree. All of Thumbstruck's playing is most enjoyable. Lucky to have him here on the forum.

Regards.

And while we are at it, - here is an other source of inspiration:

Nupepa Slack Key, a wonderful and well written piece.

Taro Patch in the key of C, - I need to try to learn this.

Jeff's tunes are so beautifully written and he performs them so well.

Terry, it's a study on so many levels. Technique, harmony ... everything. It's a source of inspiration, rather than a desire to copy, which would be impossible for me and my clumsy ten.

I wish so much that all makers were as helpful as these folks.

I'm glad your experience was good.

Regards.

Oh, he's not always that fast. Sometimes it takes a day or two.

I must say ...

I often tell folks that if they want a North American guitar that's affordable, very good quality and is backed-up almost as good as a Yamaha, then they should shop for something from Godin.

Of course, Martin and Taylor do provide lifetime warranties ... but I can't afford their guitars.

I did as GuitarVlog suggested.

Mr.Bélanger replay was prompt, positive and within the second, - it seems Godin takes full action even if the customer is half way around the world or not. Fix it to satisfaction or giving me a new box, either of the two. No questions.

I must say ...

Ambrosius:

I second GuitarVlog's comments and experience with Godin. They were very helpful and quick in supplying me with a spare bridge saddle (free!) and a battery box for my eventual switch to amplification on my Seagul SW Series. They seem to care about taking care of their customers.

Good luck!

My last experience with Godin/Seagull support was positive. They replaced my defective instrument through the local dealer. They replaced my instrument with a factory-fresh unit. Total turnaround time was 3 weeks (1 week review & evaluations, 1 week to Godin, 1 week back to me).

They won my trust and will get business from me again if I find something in their product line that fits my needs.
