I have played slack key guitar for about 3 years tuned toropatch. I also have been taking lessons on consol steel guitar for 18 months. this doubble neck is tuned C6 an E13 with only a volume pedal. My wessenborn is tuned taropatch also. I have keep the taropatch tuning becouse I knew the fret board well enought to play notes as well as chords. Now I have learned the C6 key board well enought to play notes as well chords. My question is whould there be a problem tuning all the instruments C6 which sounds more Hawiian to me? thanks in advance for any and all answers  |

Thanks for the replays folks I think for now I'll reamin with both tunings (makes me think more) at my age I gota use it before I lose it!!! |

G Taropatch can be good for playing in C, also. Wahine tunings have a maj 7th in them, Mauna Loa tunings have a 6th in them. Shoots, get plenny tunings! George Kahumoku, Jr, said over 4 dozen! At a workshop, Keola Beamer told the folks to be comfortable and versatile in one tuning before branching out. He said that it's better to be able to play well in one tuning than to play lousy in a bunch of tunings.
At yet another workshop, Cyril Pahinui said that because tunings are chordally based, corespondancies are easy to find, thus making the change to a new tuning a bit easier than starting out cold. |

The short answer is you can tune them to anything you like. Some people, myself include, use many different tunings, others find it daunting to think about the notes moving around on the fingerboard. What you will find if you do use different tunings, is that many of the patterns, or string to string intervals remain similar between the different tunings. I am very fond of Keola's C, CGDGBE, and Leonard's F CFCGCE. Most recently I have been learning Jeff Peterson's "Maui on My Mind," which is arranged in C, which simply changes Leonard's F by tuning the 5th string to G; so again the patterns don't change that much.
Fool around with it. I think you will find a lot of new sounds and concepts hiding there on your fingerboard!
