Posted - 06/17/2012 : 06:22:28 AM I've been fooling around with playing in different keys while using taropatch open G tuning. I wound up with a blog post at my Homebrewed Music blog where I usually talk about recording and video tech. http://www.homebrewedmusic.com/2012/06/16/playing-the-keys-of-c-and-d-in-open-g-tuning/
I also did a video that I broke up into three sections, they're linked from the blog post.

Posted - 07/10/2012 : 10:41:33 AM Oh how timely is this post and thank you, Fran! I was just thinking of how much I wanted to play Sweet Lei Mamo in key of D and wondering how to accomplish that in open G. Mahalo! |

Drop C capoed up is certainly the most common way I've seen.
What songs do use the cross-note concept for, Andy? Accompaniment or solo?
I do an arrangement where I start off in D for the intro, then modulate to G for the song, that's what got me started fooling with these ideas.

George Kahumoku plays in D shape in taropatch, at times.
Except that since George is usually in F taropatch he's playing in C, right?
No wonder people think slack key is mysterious!

Mahalo nui for your blog post, Fran. Your cheater D was simple and clever. I like that it can use all 6 strings and retain the low D. Thanks for showing a way to play in D without tuning to D.
Sarah
Sarah, I bet you could come up with a neat arrangement using those tricks.

Gee, Fred, you're very kind to share this. I do like to think that my opening for Ledward demonstrates that _anyone_ can find a way into slack key, because just watching Ledward can make it seem nearly impossible.
Isn't it amazing and wonderful how Hawaiian music can reach out and capture us so thoroughly? So many of us stumbled over just a few notes and fell into a new ocean of music, history, experience.

Posted - 06/18/2012 : 10:15:20 AM Innovation is Necessity's child. I learned how to comp while playing for Aunty Manu Lono's halau. I adapted some Jazz and Swing chord shapes to Taropatch (only really need 3 or 4 strings at a time). If you keep pickin' at it, it'll never heal. BTW, I've figgered out "Waikiki" in Taropatch in C. Some of the reaches are easier. |
