We got into C tunings from a "puzzler". We were talking about the C tuning used on Ozzie's "Ku'u Kika Kahiko", used in the visual background on Ozzie's site...
it's in C Mauna Loa...C G E G A E.
after I'd thought it was clever to say we should compile a list of C tunings, I realized I'm asking ya'll to re-invent the wheel.
So, From "Section IV" on George Winston's site for Dancing Cat/Section IV on tunings...

Thanks for the tip, Duke. I haven't completely figured out the tuning, but I have finally got "Maui on my Mind." BTW, if you are looking for tabs of any of Jeff's tunes, he has them for sale on his website at a very reasonable prices.

@ Allen....Taropatcher Don Kaulia uses C-G-C-G-C-E a lot and has really mastered the tuning. Don showed me 2 interesting things about this tuning. 1.) Whatever chord shapes, intervals & licks you find on strings 2,3 & 4 also work on strings 4, 5 & 6 because they are tuned the same (duh on my part)You get 2 for the price of one. Just changing between the 2 registers gives your pieces in this tuning a whole different flavor.
2.)Don pointed out that you can pick any sequence using only the 4th, 5th & 7th fret on strings 2 through 6 & it'll sound like you're jamming (even on your 1st try)I guess the unique way that the strings are tuned lines up the blues scale. I dunno I just know it works.
@ Gordon....I use the Bb Mauna Loa for my YouTube of Punahoa Special & yes strings 1 through 4 share the same intervals with C6th Mauna Loa. The only difference is that the 2 bass strings are inverted. Conducive to the bass runs used on this piece.

Disclaimer: Lots of people get blown away by this video because they think I'm producing all of it on one guitar , on one track. I actually recorded a simple rhythm part, played it back on my computer & played the lead over it. So it's not even 1/4 as impressive as most people think. |

yes, another another. Jeff arranges and composes in just about every conceivable tuning, and a few I never imagined.
Punahoa Special is a version with :
it's tuned down to a Bb, but is actually based on this: G C E G A E (which I see in Peter Medeiros book as High C Mauna Loa.
Sounds like some of the idioms/licks in Whee Haw Swing, which would be G wahine, but Jeff straightened me out!
and one HUGE omission I must touch on here...
Peter Medeiros, "Hawaiian Slack Key, a lifetime of study" (Methodology) has EXTENSIVE info, tabs and music on C tunings.
Includes Gabby transciptions, comparisons of figures done in different tunings, history, info, and many traditional as well as original pieces.
Pages and pages, starting around og, 196 and then more from pg. 192-275. and includes authentic transcriptions of Gabby AND Sonny Chillingworth recordings...as well as stuff in Taropatch, D tunings, Wahine tunings and other variants.
