Mine arrived in the mail about an hour ago--after ordering late on Sunday. Pretty fast turnaround. I just checked, and Mutual still has it on sale at $30, plus shipping, which was $5 to Minnesota.
First impression is that it's physically well-made and doesn't look like it will fall apart right away, despite its mini-doorstop thickness. It is a perfect-bound trade paperback (and thus not as sturdy as the original sewn-signature hardcover edition), but it is designed to open fairly flat, which should keep the glued binding from cracking. It would appear to have been entirely reset--Berger's new Preface reports that the original plates are gone. And even though it is smaller than the first edition (5-7/8x8-7/8 vs. 7.5x9.5") and the layout feels a bit restricted without the wide outer margins, the text space is actually a bit larger. Photos and line-drawings, which were integrated into the text, now occupy a central section and are on gloss stock. (It would have been useful for these to be referenced from the various articles where they originally were located.) Musical examples remain in the text.
It will be interesting to see how Berger and his sources expanded the text--and since I'll have to go through my book files to update and revise all the HMM references, I'll get a pretty good idea of that.

Haven't seen the book at Costco here on Kaua`i -- so grabbed one at Na Mea Hawai`i (aka "Native Books") on O`ahu this week. Planning to work my way through all 976 pages, as time permits.  |

Popularity doesn't necessarily mean talent.
Timing, marketing, packaging, pizzazz, all play a part.
Audiences get only a slice of culture from a performance. Folks can only apprehend from a performance what their background will allow them. Great discipline and effort is required to keep a mind open for nuance and depth.
The book looks like a good resource. |

I'm going to be interested in Russell's (and other's) take on the content. I'm learning a lot about the "politics" of the whole history. the section on HARA is enlightening. Since I'm priveledged to know some of the performers I find some of the insights in the text to be "interesting". I've always thought it was always about the money.

Mine should be in the pipeline by now. As for coverage, I would note that while Berger's familiarity with the field is extensive, he's not an academic, and that might have some bearing on the contents of the new edition. Then there are the realities of logistics, economics, and even finding acceptable contributors. The marvel is that, between production costs and the limited market for such a volume, it got finished at all. (In some academic areas, this would be $100+ book.)

I just got mine. Amazing work. I can't imagine what it took to do this (either edition). List of contributors is voluminous. $30 with shipping from Hawaii. Almost a pure encyclopedia, so not a "sit and read cover to cover" book. But it is filled with loads of history. After spending a few hours with it, I'm struck by two things. First, I realized how little I really knew about the history of Hawaiian Music. This is due to my relatively recent (13 years) introduction to Hawaiian music and my concentration on Slack Key. Second, I was surprized by the musicians who either made the list or were excluded from having a "section" in the book. Again, perhaps due to my personal focus. For example, a lengthy section on Amy Gilliom, but nothing dedicated to, other than casual reference, Dennis Pavao or Uncle George Kahumoku. As with any effort like this, I guess something had to give. I'm finding this an interesting "read". Give it a try. |

Original book was hardcover -- this new expanded edition is softcover (and nearly double the pages). (im)patiently waiting to get my hands on the new edition!  |
