Aloha,

Apparently the syncopation used in the tabs that Uncle Ozzie Kotani just posted of Sonny Chillingworth's Slack Key #2 was a missed beat syncopation. Due to my ignorance, I thought all syncopation involved something akin to rocket science.

What forms of syncopation are commonly used in slack key music and which mele best demonstrate the use of syncopation in slack key?

For tricky syncopation I nominate "How'd ya do", various artists...
but Makana has a clean, polyrhythm (which is a little more than just some basic syncopation--very tricky12/8 feel against 4/4 with eighths...

also, Fred Punahoa Special as played by Jeff Peterson will have all your toes counting different beats, which overlay each other. The thumb does strange things.

for a simpler one, go for Sonny's "Mo Uhane", or Cyril has one in Hanson's book. "Young Street Blues", lots of 3 against 2.

Not having anything to do with syncopation, but rather with Led being a "monster" of all things guitar, on the same page as the link from Konabob is Led backing up Alison Krause on a full on old-timey country song--Merle Travis's got nothing on Led! It ain't Hawaiian, but it is mighty good.

Syncopation is being 'off' beat or something unexpected. A more subtle use of syncopation in slack key you can find in John Trik's performance of Isa Lei, played in Open D.

Very nicely done.

Led Ka'apana definitely is a syncopation monster. This moment comes to mind.
