From David Kamakahi:

Aloha Everyone.

This is the most difficult post I've ever had to make. Hawaii has lost one of its greatest sons today. Legendary musician & composer, loving husband, father, and grandfather, Dennis David Kamakahi , passed away at the Queens Medical Center at 4:30pm. After his battle with cancer, he was surrounded by family and close friends, with the background filled with the music of Gabby Pahinui and The Sons of Hawaii. We cried, we prayed, we laughed, we sang for him his many songs that he wrote and also favorites of his own. Memorial services have not been set at this time. We will post any updates through www.teamdenniskamakahi.com.

We, the family, understand the need for his fans around the world to say their farewells. We invite you to post any messages for him or our family on his Facebook page. We appreciate all your support during this journey, we love you all. Our family is not prepared for any press statements at this time. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time. Aloha Ke Akua - God is Love.

Shocked out of my gourd to learn of his passing.

Had the great pleasure of hearing him perform in NYC twice, I think, under the auspices of the Hawaii Cultural Foundation...

"Golden Stallion" and "Wahine Ilikea" are two of my all-time slack key favorites.

Belated condolences to his ohana.

Me kealoha pumehana...

Jersey Aloha

Been away traveling and just learned of Uncle Dennis passing. His spirit will live forever in his music and inspires me to continue to study kihoalu.

...just heard yesterday...so sad, what a loss to music, and Hawaii. Uncle is the one who inspired me to play Slack Key as well. I will cherish his memory, his music, and memories of shared moments.
RIP Uncle, Heavens music will now be Open G.

p.s. Surprised, there's not a lot of postings on the TP about this.

Its a sad day for all of us. As others have said I was lucky to see him many times including last year in Maui. I had tickets to his April 12th concert which was canceled a few days earlier due to his condition. Aloha Dennis and Mahalo for all the good times you gave us over the years. Peace be with you, and with your spirit.

We deeply ache at the passing of our friend and teacher....
So many great memories, but never enough.
Songs of beauty and heart... like a rainbow.
Prayers to Ohana, Robin, David and all.

It is SO hard to accept that a force of nature such as Dennis Kamakahi could pass. He will most certainly be missed.

It was heartbreaking to wake up this morning and find out about the passing of Uncle Dennis David Kamakahi. I have so many memories etched in my mind from the times we had the immense pleasure of seeing him perform and more importantly the times spent getting to know him off stage. It is hard to imagine a world without Uncle Dennis. He was one person that truly deserved all of the accolades and awards he achieved during his life. My heart goes out to Robin Kamakahi, David Kamakahi the rest of his 'ohana and all of his fans around the world.

As she promised years ago, one of the Kalama sisters (from the Nisqually tribe) is now holding the other end of the rope to welcome him across to his next life. He will be missed by so many all across this world.

Dennis was always upbeat, full of good humor and ready to engage in conversation. His musical interested were diverse (I remember him singing one of his songs in Cajun French), and his musical impact was HUGE. It's hard to go to a kanikapila and not hear or play at least one of his compositions.
We are enriched because of him.

I was just thinking about him and Aunty Robin last night. I am so sorry for Aunty and the family's loss--and ours.
