I have been listening recently to a number of versions of this mele. (so far Dennis Kamakahi/ Amy Hanaiali'i is my favorite).
This mele has a musical style that is different than I am used to.
Although the lyrics repeat twice for each "verse" (there is probably a more correct name for a verse but I cannot think of it just now), the musical melody is different for the second time through the lyrics for each verse.
It is very striking in a duet form but also very nice with good group harmony (Makaha Sons).
Keola Beamer does an interesting version on his CD Kolonahe where he sings the first set and goes instrumental for the second melody.

Is this a common form of handling the lyrical repetition and I have just missed it before?
Is there a term for this type of change of melody between repeats in a verse?
Is there a musical or lyrical significance usually associated with it?

I briefly noted that "Kawika" may also use this format but was unable to verify it.

It sounds great, but for instrumentals there is no beating the alternating bass.
