Posted - 07/18/2009 : 1:48:21 PM I bumped into this video of Makana competing in the 2008 Guitar Superstar contest. After viewing the 1st place winner, it clear that he was robbed. Makana's performance is amazing both technically and musically. Any thoughts?

Posted - 07/23/2009 : 07:14:05 AM I was there and I have to tell you that Makana did a stellar job and the judges really didn't have much to say in terms of constructive criticism. I honestly wasn't that impressed with the girl who did end up winning. The weird thing is that it didn't seem to be a competition with a contingency for acoustic winners. 2 out of the 3 winners were acoustic yet they both won this big electric guitar package - the girl who won 1st place seemed surprised and when they presented her with the prize she said "well I guess I have to learn how to play electric now". Very strange.... |

Posted - 07/18/2009 : 4:04:55 PM After checking out the videos, it looks like that Vicki Genfan is pretty good at this style. (Acoustic shred?)
That said, it isn't my favorite style but there are a couple of current players who I like in that style.
Have you guys heard of Andy McKee or Erik Mongrain?
(I particularly like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsD6uEZsIsU ) |

Posted - 07/18/2009 : 2:44:29 PM I like Makana but I think he just lost to two other very good guitar players. It is subjective after all. Vicki Genfan is a pretty good guitar player! You don't see that? My 2 cents. |
