Have been playing the banjo most of the time these days. Felt like playing some of the slack key songs I learned on the uke on the banjo since the tuning is the same. Even got a reply from Patrick Landeza on my feeble attempt at Pilipuka. That's what's so neat about the slack key/Hawaiian music community!

Long as I don't gotta mess with water pipes! They always leak & need 2 extra trips to the hardware store. Best advice I ever got was "Don't start no plumbing project when the Hardware is about to close."

OK, how 'bout parlor pipes, or better yet, Northumbrian pipes?

We had a piper at work. We did a hobby show every summer, so some of us put a Jazz band together, guys brought their classic cars, coin collections, etc. Even had a Middle Eastern Dancer from the offices. I had a PA set up for us to sing through. When the piper came up, he suggested I turn it off, so his bagpipes didn't blow my speakers. Good advice. He was louder all alone than our whole combo!

I think Patrick chastised Paulfor "rolling" on guitar like a banjo player. He knew right away Paul was a banjo player. But Paul is much better now, Patrick. He does your homework like every day for 5 years already.

I have a banjo uke, sad but true, Wanda, but I only use it for twenties' songs, ragtime, and for old timey stirng band music. The Hillbillies', one of the premiere old time string band, had one, and also Fiddlin' Powers and Family. Not for Hawaiian music, tho. Bluegrass banjo may be good for slack key tunes, but not old time frailing. Interesting factoid: when I took Cyril's slack key workshop last November, the picking pattern he used for C tuning is like a Scruggs roll, so slack key banjo is possible. Here in LA I'm a banjo guy. Been to one pickin' party already. Yee Hah! (Oh - but that's what Ledward says).

Paul thinks he is a comedian. Maybe if he wanted a baritone `ukulele.

Hey, we've got a little 6 or 7 year old girl at the halau (who is probably the best student there) who wants Paul to teach her to play `ukulele. I taught her C chord yesterday!

I'm with you Wanda; I never quite got into the banjo uke.

The Sunday Manoa had Peter Moon playing 5-string banjo on a few cuts. I recall Gary Haleamau playing some 5-string also.
