I have to admit...I'm stuck...
I'm trying to suggest 1st songs to a beginner adult friend...doing elementary slack guitar,

I know what I like and know...but she seems to gravitate towards the beauty/nature and maybe songs of endearment...

yikes...
My little list includes, Wahine Ilikea, Ku'u Morning Dew, Ku'u Home..., and a few of the camp favorites....
of course lots of Ozzie, Jeff and other good slack guitar materials...
but she wants to use guitar and sing...so good basic accompaniment, and focus on the words, pronunciation, and execution of vocal/accompaniment on guitar....perhaps strumming or finger-style backup to get us over the rocks, known but not so much over-played.
As in my Freshman research papers, my topics are, of course, too big!

I first started learning the turnarounds in Taropatch. Went to Bruddah John, maintaining a steady alternating base. Still trying to get that alternating base sounding good in Taropatch.
Few years ago I attended Mark Nelsons class @ Dusty Strings and now finally can play Punahele in Double Slack.
Some of the songs that I started with are the following.
Alawiki Slack Key Arranged by Ron Loo
Kahuli Aku
Kani Ki Ho alu
Manuela Boy
Kealoha
Hilo March
Now doing some of Ozzie inTaropatch and dropped C. Slack Key Medley and Hi'lawe.
This has been a great journey for me. I am enjoying every song that I try to learn.

I only sing instrumentals, but "Salomila" and "Manuela Boy" each have only 2 chords and can be played in G or C in Taropatch.

There is a very good, relatively simple arrangement of Hi'ilawe by Patrick Landeza published in the June or July edition of Acoustic Guitar. Mino'aka or He Punahele from Keola Beamer are also beautiful and not exceedingly challenging pieces. The first piece that I learned was Pua Lililehua (the melody half) fromo Keola's first Slack Key book back in the early '80s.
Aloha,
Allen
