Since starting to listen to slack key again, I have this longing to go back. I think the music makes it worse, but I can't stop. What can be done?

When Akua kicked Adam & Eve out of Hawai`i, they was bummed out, too.

Every time I pick up the guitar and play a folk song from across the sea I am transported back to these wonderful islands. Our family makes sacrifices to get back to islands at least once to twice a year. Does anyone know of counseling for this type of compulsive behavior? Many of us here seem to have it here in the patch. Of course, there are worse vices than wanting to be in paradise and play guitar to the rhythm of the ocean.

Hawaii is a place of the heart so if you have a heart it never goes away.

I have a chronic condition "missing Hawaii." It makes me happy to pick up my guitar and play some of those wonderful slack key tunes. That makes me feel more betta!

Saving money to go back is priceless. My penny jar is filling up and my longing for steamed mullet in shoyu and green onion is making me hungry for local kine food. Ahh da plate lunch. At our house we have local kine kau kau nights many times. So fill your heart up with the things that make you feel connected to the islands as you are very much connected you just need to make yourself feel that you are.

It never goes away for me. Everything I do all year long works toward going back for a couple of weeks. Every penny I spend is done in comparison to how it fits in the scheme of going back to Hawai`i...e.g., co-pay for one session of blood work and shots x 5 = airfare to Hawai`i; one month cardiac rehab = dinner at Chai's.

If it is that hard for malihini like Paul and I, I can only imagine the heartache it is for island born people who must leave and cannot afford to go back. It has to tear your heart out. Every time I hug Duke and Jay goodbye, I am depressed for days and days afterward. The plane ride home is bleak and tiring.

The music and the videos make me feel good inside. That is why I play only Hawaiian music. Other stuff always seems to be a downer for me.

Have to find like minded people to share the thoughts and memories with. Jam partners, hula halau, etc.Watch videos on YouTube. The longing doesn't go away, and it gets harder to come home every time we go. Only cure is to relocate to Hawai`i. "Keep winter at your door, and keep the Islands in your heart, drink a toast to Bold Orion on the rise." paraphrase of Bold Orion,by Leo Kretzner

Could only help. Even better, find folks to jam with.

Yeh, but I don't know if it would help or make things worse!

If you can't get to the islands, cook some fried rice with Spam and Portuguese sausage, eat it, den jus' press.
