Has this been discussed on the board? It certainly got past me if it did. No idea of the quality, but they link says the sound track is all existing slack key.

Ozzie told me a long time ago that his composition "Paka Ua" (Raindrops) the title track of his CD was going to be included in the soundtrack. Someone actually tried to block the usage for the soundtrack in the beginning. Want details? Email me. |

Makana opens the trailer. Lots of Hawaiian music by Hawaiian artists in this film, big names and small names alike. |

Trailers are often produced well before the films themselves are in final production. It's an interesting job, I suspect, being a composer or music supervisor for trailers, because you are heavily involved in "selling" the film to potential audiences.
John Beal is one of the most successful composers specializing in music themes for trailers; he composes stuff that just sounds familiar when you hear it, yest is totally original. A few years back, he issued a CD of many of his more commonly used themes, titled "Coming Soon." |

Thanks, Don. It didn't occur to me till you mentioned this, but I "Shazammed" the trailer with my iPhone and indeed it identified the brief cut as "`Ulili E" from Dennis and David's CD "`Ohana", even though there were voices in the trailer speaking over the music. Technology's grand... sometimes. |

Dennis Kamakahi recently mentioned that his and David's version of "`Ulili E" would be part of the soundtrack for The Descendants. Someone on the movie's production staff has very good taste in music!

In an interview available on-line, the director said he wants to use "100% Hawaiian music". The trailer has acoustic guitar that in the middle includes a rendition of "Ulili E"-- I don't know by who. Approximately the last third of the trailer is from the 2009 CD "The First Days of Spring" by the English indie-folk group Noah and the Whale.
After reading the comments here and elsewhere about the Swiss-Peruvian actress Q'orianka Kilcher and her portrayal of the hapa Princess Kaiulani last year, it will be interesting to see how Mr. Clooney is received as an actor who portrays--according to the film's press releases-- a hapa landowner "with Hawaiian royalty in his blood". |

Because part of the storyline includes a Hanalei Bay-front house, the film crew was based one our north shore for about a month. A neighbor who walks the beach every morning saw George Clooney daily and said he was "just one of the morning beach walkers". No entourage...just enjoying Hanalei Bay.
Loved the book and am anxious to see the film. And <swoon> George!  |
